Easy Halloween Recipes for Kids: Spooky Eyed Buns

Looking for easy Halloween recipes for kids that are fun to make and don’t need any baking? These Spooky Eyed Buns are a firm favourite — crunchy rice krispie buns topped with a googly fondant “eyeball” that’s guaranteed to get a laugh (and maybe a shudder) from the kids.

No oven required for the eyeballs themselves, and little hands will love rolling, painting and decorating their own creepy creations.

Ingredients

  • 1 packet ready-to-roll icing
  • Green food colouring
  • Blue food colouring
  • Red food colouring
  • Rice Krispie buns (see our recipe for these first)

Method

1. Take the ready-to-roll icing and cut it into small pieces.

2. Roll each piece into a small ball shape.

3. Place each ball on a plate and press a small indent into the centre with your thumb.

4. Using the green food colouring, paint a small circle into the indent and leave it to dry.

5. Mix a little blue and red food colouring together to make purple.

6. Add a small purple dot in the centre of each green circle to finish the “eyeball” look.

7. Leave to dry completely.

8. Make your rice krispie buns following our recipe, then press an eyeball into the centre of each one before setting aside to set fully.

Tips for making these with kids

  • Little ones love the rolling and painting steps best — let them take the lead on decorating each eyeball.
  • If a child has a food allergy or intolerance, always check the ingredients list on your ready-to-roll icing packet before you start.
  • These buns are best made a few hours ahead so the icing eyeballs have plenty of time to dry and the rice krispie buns have time to set.
  • Making a big batch? Lay out all the icing eyeballs on a tray first, then let everyone choose their favourite to press into their bun.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can younger kids help make these?

Yes — this is a great recipe for younger children as there’s no baking involved. They can help roll the icing balls and paint on the eyeball details, with an adult handling the rice krispie mixture.

How far ahead can I make Spooky Eyed Buns?

You can make the icing eyeballs a day in advance so they have plenty of time to dry, then assemble the buns closer to when you plan to serve them.

Do I need any special equipment?

No — just a plate for rolling and drying the icing eyeballs, and whatever bowl and tin you use for your rice krispie buns.

Can I use shop-bought rice krispie treats instead of making my own?

Yes, if you’re short on time you can press an icing eyeball into a shop-bought rice krispie treat for the same spooky effect.
