Thomas the Tank Engine has been a much-loved part of childhood for generations, so when Mattel decided to bring more female characters to the front of the show, it was a big moment for long-time fans. Meet Thomas the Tank Engine’s new female characters, Nia and Rebecca.
Two new female engines joined Thomas & Friends as part of a wider overhaul of the series, aimed at refreshing Thomas’ image, appealing to a broader audience, and giving the Sodor train shed a better gender balance.
Nia and Rebecca became regular characters alongside Emily, who had previously been the only female engine on the island. To make room for them, Edward and Henry moved out of the main train shed, though they continued to appear in the show from time to time.

Meet Nia and Rebecca
Nia is an engine from Kenya who made her first appearance in the film Big World! Big Adventures! before joining the television series full-time. She’s based on the East African Railways’ ED1 class and is mainly orange, with a colourful African-inspired stripe design.
Rebecca is a yellow engine who comes from the mainland near Thomas’ fictional home of Sodor. She’s based on the Southern Railway West Country 4-6-2 Pacific engine.

Why Did Mattel Add New Characters?
According to Mattel, viewership of Thomas & Friends had long been split fairly evenly between girls and boys, with girls actually more likely to watch on a regular weekly basis. Despite this, the show’s branding and merchandise had rarely reflected girl audiences at all.
As part of the changes, Mattel began incorporating girls into the packaging and advertising for Thomas & Friends, and developed a wider range of clothing, bed linen and accessories designed to appeal to a broader market. Nia toys arrived first, with Rebecca toys following a little later.
What Else Changed?
Alongside the arrival of Nia and Rebecca, the show also sent Thomas travelling beyond Sodor for the first time, with episodes featuring destinations including China, India and Australia.
Other changes introduced around the same time included Thomas’ own voice replacing the narrator, a new theme song, faster-paced animation, and more humour throughout the series.
