Who doesn’t remember waking up on weekends, watching Mickey Mouse and his adventures? Behind our best movie memories is The Walt Disney Company. They have produced 100’s of movies over the years and here is my choice of 5 of the Best Classic Disney Movies to watch with the family. Is your favourite on the list?

Born in 1901, Walt Disney was reportedly a shy individual with a lack of confidence. Along with his brother Roy, he went on to found the Walt Disney Corporation in 1923. The first movie he ever produced was Alice’s Wonderland, a silent black and white movie that signalled the beginning of an era that has touched the heart of millions.

Mickey Mouse came along a few years later, the lovely, warm hearted rodent who is always eager to help his friends and defend justice, is reported to be based on Walt’s own pet mouse! Designed in 1928, Mickey was the first ever cartoon to have synchronised sound. One can only imagine the excitement on that first viewing. Our hero mouse stays with us to this day as the mascot of Walt Disney Company.

But enough about history, let’s take a look at our favourite Disney movies. Here are our chosen best Disney Movies to watch with the family.

#1. Bambi (1942)

My personal favourite Disney movie to watch with the family is Bambi. A little fawn named Bambi learns very early in his life the cruelty of human nature and through adventures with his friends, he manages to overcome any difficulties that may come in his way.

This Disney movie was my number one pick despite its rough beginning, because it shows that from a young age you don’t always get what you want, sometimes you have to fight for what you need.

#2. The Many Adventures of Winnie the Pooh (1977)

This is a must-see movie for all the family. Winnie and his friends always seem to get up to adventures, from eating too much and getting stuck in the rabbit’s house door to trying to find Eeyore, the sad donkey’s tail. I love the way they try to solve the mishaps that befall them. Kids of all ages love this Disney movie.

#3 Hocus Pocus (1993)

This classic Disney movie about three witches who are accidentally summoned and cause chaos wherever they go trying to restore their youth, has stood the test of time. Wherever there is a talking cat, there must be some crazy things happening, right? It may not be an animated film, but is a super family comedy to watch with the kids.

#4. Brother Bear (2003)

An animated film instilling the values of brotherly love and affection as well as respect for all living things. When our protagonist does something that could be avoided, the spirits get angry with him and transform him into a bear! The standout  in the film for me is when he is transformed into a bear, the colours and sounds are amazing. A feel good movie suitable for all ages.

#5. Fantasia (1940)

My Disney movies list would not be complete without the masterpiece that is Fantasia. Created in 1940, Fantasia is a collection of 8 segments accompanied by astounding classical music conducted by Leopold Stokowski. Mickey Mouse is seen in one of the segments as the Sorcerer’s Apprentice, with a few mishaps along the way.

The sequel, Fantasia 2000 was released in 1999 and is also a breathtaking Disney movie to watch with the family. It keeps Mickey Mouse as the Sorcerer’s Apprentice but adds seven new segments and conductor James Levine leads the Chicago Symphony Orchestra to perform the music.

I’m sure your favourite Disney movie list will be quite different from mine. But one thing they all have in common is their ability to touch and inspire us in some way.
