Registered dietitian and mum of three Aoife Hearne shares her recipe for a beetroot and orange breakfast smoothie – a tasty and nutritious way to start the day.
Beetroot might not be the first thing you’d reach for at breakfast time, but blended with orange, banana and a hint of cardamom, it works beautifully in this smoothie. It’s a great option for busy mornings when you want something quick, filling and packed with goodness for the whole family.

Beetroot and Orange Breakfast Smoothie
Serves 2
Ingredients:
- 60g beetroot
- 60ml low fat milk
- 1 medium banana
- 1 medium orange
- 1 cardamom seed
- 7 ice cubes
- 1/2 tsp vanilla extract
- Pinch of salt
- 1 tbsp lemon juice
- 30g Flahavan’s Super Oats
A Few Tips Before You Start
If you’re making this for little ones, peel and segment the orange first to make blending easier, and check the banana is ripe for natural sweetness. The beetroot adds a lovely colour as well as flavour, so don’t be surprised by the vibrant pink result – it’s part of the fun for kids at the breakfast table.
This smoothie also works well as an after-school snack or a quick pick-me-up, not just a breakfast option.
FAQs
Can I use cooked or raw beetroot in this smoothie?
Either works well, though cooked beetroot tends to blend more smoothly and has a milder, sweeter taste that many kids prefer.
What can I use instead of cardamom?
If you don’t have cardamom to hand, you can simply leave it out. A small pinch of cinnamon makes a nice alternative if you’d like a bit of warmth to the flavour.
Can I make this smoothie dairy-free?
Yes, you can swap the low fat milk for a plant-based milk of your choice, such as oat or almond milk.
Is this smoothie suitable for young children?
It’s a nutritious option for most children, but as with any new recipe, introduce it gradually and keep an eye out for any food sensitivities, particularly if it’s a first-time ingredient for your child.
