Galway is full of brilliant playgrounds, thanks to years of hard work from the City and County Councils and the local groups who campaigned for them. Whether you’re in the city centre or out in the countryside, there’s almost always a great spot to stop, climb, swing and explore nearby.
The local playground down the road is always handy, but sometimes it’s fun to try somewhere new. Galway City has a huge number of playgrounds scattered across its estates and parks, so you’ll rarely have to travel far. Try These Fun Playgrounds in Galway
Doughiska Playground
Doughiska Playground is a firm favourite of ours, and arguably one of the best in Galway City, with equipment for all ages. Nearby you’ll find tennis courts and a skateboarding area, handy if you’ve got older kids in tow, plus a large grassy area with benches between the skate park and the playground itself.
For younger children there’s an enclosed area with a small swing and slides, plus a sand section with diggers for digging and dumping, and pulleys to lift sand and pour it through a pipe — always a hit.
The rest of the playground is well spaced out, with a tyre swing, a “nest” swing, a spinning cage, two zip lines, an in-ground trampoline, see-saws, a climbing pyramid and two slides built into the side of the hill. Our family favourite is the “hamster wheel”.

Rinville Park Playground
Rinville Park sits just five minutes from the picturesque village of Oranmore. It’s a lovely amenity built around an ancient castle, a stately home and a fine estate demesne dating back to the 16th century.
There are paved walks suitable for buggies and bikes, a woodland walk for exploring nature, and a playground tucked inside the old walled garden — often noticeably warmer than the rest of the park thanks to its sheltered spot.
The park also runs right along the seashore, so you can do some beachcombing or settle in for a picnic at one of the benches while you’re there.

Roscam Playground
This playground sits between the estates of Caiseal Cam, Ros Caoin and Boireann Bheag, on a gentle slope facing the sea with lovely, unobstructed views over Galway Bay. Alongside the playground you’ll find enclosed tennis courts, kick-about courts and grass pitches, plus smaller play areas dotted through the estates, including a toddler play area in Boireann Bheag.
From spinning and swinging to climbing and balancing, there’s something here for children of every ability. A large tower at the centre of the climbing unit radiates outward with sliding, climbing and balancing challenges on every side.

Cappagh Road Playground, Knocknacarra
This playground really has it all. Set beside the beautiful Barna Woods and the GAA pitch, there’s a large car park and plenty of room for the kids to run about. It’s a big playground, and even when busy, there’s enough space and equipment to keep everyone happy.
The main playground has a zip wire, a large climbing frame with a slide and fireman’s pole, swings of various sizes, a smaller climbing frame with ropes and nets, a see-saw, and a small slide with a play house. Attached to this is another climbing frame with a beam and a moving drum, a bit like a fast-moving treadmill. For older kids, there’s a high, wavy slide set slightly apart from the main play area but still visible from it.
Monivea Playground
Monivea is a short drive from Athenry and well worth the trip. The playground is located at the junction in the village, behind the castle and beside the Garda Station.
There are two climbing structures, one for younger children and a taller one for older kids, plus three types of swings (toddler, nest and regular) so every age gets a turn. Younger children will enjoy the bouncy horses and a see-saw, while older kids can take on the large spinning circle they can walk, run or sit on.

Connemara National Park Playground
Connemara National Park covers around 2,957 hectares of mountains, bogs, heaths, grasslands and woodlands. Some of its peaks, including Benbaun, Bencullagh, Benbrack and Muckanaght, form part of the famous Twelve Bens, or Beanna Beola, range.
The playground sits right beside the visitor centre. The junior area suits children aged two to six, while the older area is designed for six to twelve year olds. After tackling the climbing unit, take a breather to admire the view while planning your next move, whether that’s a quiet sit in the playhouse or spinning until you’re dizzy on the spinner bowl.
With a spectacular backdrop and seating for adults, this playground makes for a genuinely fun day out for the whole family.

Cairde Mor Playground, Lackagh
Ideally located just minutes from Claregalway, Lackagh and Turloughmore, the playground at Lackagh was funded by the local community and businesses with support from Galway Rural Development.
With lots of great equipment, a colourful design and plenty of room to play, this playground has become a much-loved local amenity for families in the area.
Kinvara Playground
This playground is located on the grounds of St Joseph’s National School but is open all day and accessible to the public.
Whether your child wants to lie quietly in the bird’s nest swing or spin until dizzy on the spinner bowl, there’s plenty of fun to be had here.
Lettermullen Playground
Lettermullen Playground sits next to Comhar Chuigéal Teo, the community co-op that drove the project forward.
It’s designed for children aged two to fifteen, with separate junior and senior areas, and there’s seating so parents can relax while the kids test out the equipment. It’s opposite the church and the national school, so it’s easy to find.
The spinner bowl and supernova are two of the most popular pieces of equipment, letting children test their balance and enjoy a good spin.
Oughterard Playground
The junior area has swings with cradle seats, a climbing structure, an ambulance springer, a fun phone, a see-saw and play panels. Older kids can enjoy swings, plenty of climbing equipment and a roundabout.
The playground is on the right as you enter Oughterard, next to the car park for the GAA pitch.
