Within a short drive you can choose between lakeshores, riverside trails, forest paths and gentle hill walks, all with plenty of space to let the kids run, explore and burn off some energy. Nature Walks in Leitrim
Glencar Hill Walk

The Glencar Hill Walk follows the shores of Glencar Lake and passes the spectacular Glencar Waterfall on its way towards Dooneens.
There’s a climb at the start, so it’s best suited to families with older children or confident walkers, but the easy-to-moderate route rewards you with incredible views over Sligo Bay, Knocknarea, Truskmore, Benbulben, the Leitrim Hills and Glencar Lake and Valley.
Aghacashel Looped Walk
This walk starts in the village of Drumshanbo and is an easy 3km loop suitable for all the family, including younger children and less experienced walkers.
Fowleys Falls in Rossinver

Fowleys Falls is a lovely option if you have preschoolers in tow. The trail isn’t too long, yet it feels wonderfully remote, running close to a fast-flowing river and waterfall. There are picnic tables at one end, so it’s easy to build in a break for snacks or lunch.
Carrick-on-Shannon Slí Walking Route
An easy, level walk by the river, this 5.5km route starts near the bridge in Carrick-on-Shannon, opposite the remains of Carrigdrumruske Castle. Much of the route runs alongside the river, making it a scenic option for families who prefer flatter ground.
Glenfarne Forest Walk
Glenfarne Forest, part of the Glenfarne Demesne, offers a scenic ramble of around two hours with fantastic views across Lough MacNean to Fermanagh.
Along the way, families can follow part of the MacNean Sculpture Trail, take in some of the history of the Tottenham Estate, and visit Ladies Rest, where ladies from the Great Hall once came to bathe and relax.
The walk follows forest paths and tracks and is self-guided, with a choice of three varied, circular, signposted routes — handy if you want to tailor the length to your family’s energy levels.
Acres Lake Boardwalk

Acres Lake Boardwalk was Ireland’s first floating boardwalk, and it remains a brilliant spot for families.
The 600m boardwalk, in the picturesque village of Drumshanbo, marks the start of a 6.5km linear walking and cycling trail along the Shannon Blueway, running from Acres Lake to Battlebridge Lock near Leitrim Village. It’s a great choice if you fancy combining a walk with a family bike ride.
Drumleague Lock Loop Walk
This 5km loop starts at Battlebridge Lock and follows the canal to Drumleague Lock. After crossing the canal at the lock, the trail brings you back along the other side to Battlebridge Lock — a satisfying half-day walk with a real sense of place.
