Why Small Movement Counts

We often think that to get any benefit from exercise, we need to work out for over an hour, sweat hard, and feel like our lungs are on fire. That’s simply not true. In fact, many of us would agree that the idea of needing a full hour to train is exactly what stops us getting out the door in the first place.

Atomic Habits author James Clear puts it well: “Be great in the smallest of ways.” It’s a mindset worth holding onto. When we’re trying to build a plan, get fitter, or become more active, it’s easy to think, “I don’t have time for a 30-minute walk,” or “I can’t fit in a 40-minute run,” or “I don’t have an hour for the gym, so what’s the point?”

Our need to do things perfectly can stop us from doing anything at all — and that gets in the way of achieving success in small, sustainable ways.

Today’s Challenge

Your task for today is simple: be great in the smallest of ways. Look for one small way to move more today — a short walk, a few minutes of stretching, a quick dance around the kitchen with the kids. It all counts.
