Frequently Asked Questions

Can I make sausage mummies ahead of time?

Yes – you can wrap the sausages in pastry and keep them covered in the fridge for a few hours before baking. This makes them handy to prep earlier in the day if you’re getting ready for a party or a busy school morning.

Can I freeze sausage mummies?

You can freeze them unbaked. Wrap the pastry-covered sausages, freeze on a tray until solid, then transfer to a freezer bag. Bake from frozen, adding a little extra time and checking they’re cooked through before adding the eyes.

Can I use vegetarian sausages instead?

Absolutely – vegetarian or plant-based sausages work well in this recipe. Just follow the same pastry-wrapping method and adjust baking time according to the sausage packet instructions.

What can I use instead of puff pastry?

Shortcrust pastry also works if that’s what you have to hand, though puff pastry gives that classic flaky “bandage” texture that makes these so fun.
