When Should I Bring My Baby for Newborn Photos?
The age of your baby is a big factor in capturing those beautiful sleepy images. Newborn babies are best photographed in the first two weeks, so photographers only have a small window to get those shots.
At this early stage, your baby will be sleeping a lot of the time and will still love to curl up in poses similar to those in the womb — which is how those gorgeous newborn photos are achieved.
Because there’s such a short timeframe to capture these precious images, it’s best to book your newborn photo session during pregnancy. A booking is usually made based on your due date and then confirmed once baby arrives. Our advice: put your newborn photographer on the “first people to call” list when you’re announcing baby’s arrival to the world.

What If Baby Arrives a Little Early or Late?
Don’t worry if your baby doesn’t arrive exactly when expected — not many do! Most newborn photographers will expect the booked session to move around to some extent, and many only take a certain number of bookings each month to allow for this flexibility.
What Will I Need to Bring?
There’s no need to run around the shops or dig through your newly gifted baby outfits to find something for your baby to wear. Most newborn photographers will have a selection of props and outfits in the studio. You can also chat to your photographer in advance if there’s a particular outfit you’d like your baby to wear, and they’ll let you know if it’s suitable for posing.
Babies tend to feed a little more than usual during sessions, so if you’re bottle-feeding, bring plenty of bottles.

How Long Will Newborn Photos Take?
Posed newborn photos take time and patience — expect to be in the studio for around 3–4 hours.
Plenty of time is built in for feeds and cuddles as needed. Photographers will usually spend much more time soothing and settling your baby than actually taking photographs.
What Will Happen On the Day?
When you arrive at the studio for your newborn photo session, expect it to be nice and warm. The studio is kept at a comfortable temperature to ensure your baby is content, even when wearing very little.
It’s usually best to feed baby just before you leave home, or when you arrive at the studio — a baby with a full tummy will often settle into a lovely sleepy state for the photos.

What About Family Photos?
It’s always worth having mum and dad jump in for some of the photos too. Most mums are tired, recovering, and don’t always feel “camera ready” just a few short days after giving birth — but you’ll be so glad to have those precious photos later on.
If baby has siblings, it’s lovely to get some photos of them all together too.
Oh, and Be Prepared…
You may have seen one of those funny viral clips of a newborn photographer’s little model having an, ahem, accident mid-shoot. It happens more often than you’d think — it’s simply part of the job! Nothing to worry about, and all blankets and props are washed after every session.
A Last Little Tip
Bring a soother or dummy — even if your baby hasn’t taken to one yet, or you’re not sure if you want to use one. It can be a make-or-break element in capturing certain poses.
Most importantly, enjoy the moment. This is your chance to sit back and relax while watching your beautiful new baby being photographed. Every time you look back at these photos, you’ll remember just how special that day was with your new family.

Frequently Asked Questions
What’s the best age for newborn photos?
The first two weeks after birth is the ideal window. Babies are still sleepy and curl into womb-like poses naturally at this stage, which helps create those classic newborn images.
Do I need to buy an outfit for the session?
No — most newborn photographers provide props and outfits, and will happily discuss any special outfit you’d like to bring along in advance.
How long does a newborn photo session take?
Plan for around 3–4 hours, with plenty of built-in time for feeding, settling and cuddles.
What should I do if my baby’s due date changes?
Don’t worry — most newborn photographers are used to bookings shifting around a due date and will work with you to reschedule once baby arrives.
Can older siblings or parents be in the photos too?
Yes, absolutely. Many families choose to include mum, dad and siblings in some of the shots alongside the solo newborn images.
