Kids Will Love This Recipe for Homemade Sausages

Have you ever tried making homemade sausages? They’re easier than you’d think, and quick to make too. This homemade sausages recipe is ready in a matter of minutes and is perfect for picnics, parties or the BBQ.

Most children love sausages — and so do most adults — but it’s easy to feel uneasy about what goes into shop-bought ones. Alongside the fat content, commercial sausages aren’t always high in actual pork, and they can carry a lot of salt.

This is a lovely one to try instead. The best part? You don’t need any sausage skins — just shape the mixture into sausages before frying.

Recipe for Homemade Sausages

This recipe makes 16 sausages.

Ingredients

  • 1 lb pork mince
  • 2–4 teaspoons mixed fresh herbs
  • 1 large clove of garlic
  • 1 egg
  • 2 ½ oz soft white breadcrumbs
  • Salt and pepper
  • A little oil for frying

Method

1. Place all the ingredients above, except the oil, into a large bowl and mix really well with your hands or a wooden spoon.

2. Divide the mixture into 16 pieces and roll each piece into a sausage shape.

3. Heat some oil in your frying pan and cook until golden on all sides.

4. If using for picnics, drain them on kitchen roll, let them cool, then pop them into a tub to take along.

5. For a BBQ, cook them in advance and simply warm them through on some tin foil on top of the grill.

Can I make these sausages ahead of time?

Yes. They cook and cool well, so you can make them the day before a picnic or BBQ and keep them in the fridge in an airtight container until needed.

Can I freeze homemade sausages?

Yes, once cooked and completely cooled, they freeze well. Defrost fully in the fridge before reheating.

Can I swap the pork mince for another meat?

Yes — this method works well with turkey, chicken or beef mince too, though cooking times may vary slightly depending on the mince you use.

Do I need a sausage machine or skins to make these?

No. That’s the beauty of this recipe — you simply shape the mixture by hand into sausage shapes and fry, no special equipment required.
