Marble Hill Beach, Dunfanaghy

Marble Hill Beach is one of the most beautiful beaches in Donegal. At high tide it splits into two distinct sections, with small yachts and boats often moored in the bay during summer.
This beach is popular with swimmers, surfers and bathers, as well as families looking for a good beach walk and kids set on building sandcastles.
Rossnowlagh Beach
Rossnowlagh Beach, known locally as ‘The Heavenly Cove’, is regarded by many as the most scenic and dramatic beach in the whole Northwest. Located just 8km northwest of Ballyshannon and 16km south of Donegal Town, it offers fantastic views across Donegal Bay.
Set in a 4km crescent of golden sand, it’s popular for all kinds of water sports and walkers year-round. Vehicle access to the strand has traditionally made this a favourite with families, though it’s worth checking current local access rules before you visit.

Pollan Beach, Ballyliffin

Located on the northwestern tip of the Inishowen Peninsula, picturesque Pollan Bay is a long stretch of sandy beach looking out towards Glashedy Island.
Water sports fans will find plenty to enjoy here, particularly windsurfing, while kids will love the eco-friendly playground right beside the beach.
Narin/Portnoo Beach
Located about 2km from Portnoo, 8km from Ardara or 10km from Glenties, Narin/Portnoo is a sheltered cove roughly 2km long.
Inishkeel Island sits just 250m offshore and can be reached on foot at low tide by crossing a tidal sandbank – a real adventure the kids will love!
There are toilet facilities near the beach with plenty of parking, and local shops, bars and restaurants within walking distance.

Fintra Beach
Fintra is about 1.5km from Killybegs on the way to Kilcar/Glencolmcille. It’s a long sandy beach stretching around 1km along the bay.
This sheltered beach draws plenty of day trippers over the summer months, alongside plenty of local regulars.
The beach is flanked by sand dunes on its landward side, leading into the old Killybegs GAA pitch. Parking is excellent, with one large car park.
Five Fingers Strand

One of the most scenic spots in Donegal, Five Fingers Strand on the Inishowen Peninsula features some of the highest sand dunes in Europe, reaching up to 30m.
There’s plenty to see and discover here, and kids will love exploring the tidepools, dunes and shoreline.

Murvagh Beach
Murvagh is about 10km from Donegal Town on the way to Ballyshannon. It’s a long, sheltered, sandy beach stretching around 2km along the bay.
The water is generally warm and pleasant for swimming, and thanks to a long, flat plateau of sandbanks it stays only about a metre deep in places – ideal for children to paddle and swim.
The beach is flanked by dunes on its leeward side, part of a designated Special Area of Conservation. These dunes lead into Murvagh Forest, which has picnic tables, clearings and open spaces great for ball games. Parking is excellent, with one large car park and several smaller areas along the beach front.
Ballymastocker Bay, Portsalon

Ballymastocker Bay, also known as Portsalon Beach, lies on the shores of Lough Swilly between Rathmullan and Fanad. Set within a Natural Heritage Area, it offers some of the finest views in the region.
Voted one of the most beautiful beaches in the world, the golden sand at Ballymastocker stretches for over a mile towards the little harbour town of Portsalon.
Rathmullan Beach
This stunning sandy beach is perfect for swimming, splashing, sailing or surfing. Stretching for approximately 3km, Rathmullan Beach is a real hidden gem along Lough Swilly.

Culdaff Beach

Culdaff, a Blue Flag beach on the Inishowen Peninsula, is ideal for swimming and sunbathing. It has plenty of rock pools for paddling and wildlife watching, with a Special Area of Conservation nearby.
Lisfannon Beach
Lisfannon is a sandy beach on the shores of Lough Swilly. The area is a Natural Heritage Area and an important wetlands site for birds.
Fahan Wood, within 1km of the beach, is classified as being of regional importance. Lisfannon is a popular recreational beach for locals and day-trippers from Derry City.

Downings Beach
Downings is a seaside town that really comes alive in summer! The beach here is a family favourite, with 5km of golden strand well able to handle the crowds it draws.
Carrickfinn Beach

Close to Annagry, Carrickfinn is an extensive sandy beach with a good dune system, set in the stunning Gweedore Bay, a Natural Heritage Area with many varied coastal habitats. Keep an eye out for dolphins, often spotted offshore!
Killahoey Beach
Killahoey, more commonly known as Dunfanaghy Beach, sits just past Dunfanaghy Golf Course on the outskirts of town. It’s used mainly by locals and can be quite windy, as it isn’t a sheltered beach.
A walk here rewards you with breathtaking views of Horn Head, Muckish Mountain rising in the background, and the Rosguill Peninsula reaching out across the bay – a panoramic vista not to be missed.
Kinnagoe Bay

Situated on the east coast of the Inishowen Peninsula, about 4km from the small fishing village of Greencastle, Kinnagoe Bay is a secluded, photo-worthy stretch of beach at the base of a steep, sloping hillside.
Bundoran Beach
The sandy Bundoran Beach is very popular, particularly with surfers, and sits close to the town’s main street with plenty of cafés, restaurants and amenities nearby.
There’s ample parking, picnic tables and a children’s playground close by.
