Watergate logoThe Theatre

Located in the heart of Kilkenny City, the Watergate Theatre have been keeping audiences entertained since 1993 with local, national and international theatre productions, live music, dance, comedy and much more. Check out their listings for family shows before you visit.

Indoor Centres

Jellie Tots Playcentre, located in the Loughboy Industrial Estate (take the Woodies exit off the Ring Road and take the 2nd left turn into Jellie Tots).  Parents can enjoy a coffee while the kids run off some steam.

MacDonagh Junction‘s Indoor Shopping Centre, is ideal for a rainy day. You can get a bite to eat at one of the cafés in Workhouse Square while being entertained by free live music on Saturday and Sunday afternoons. There is also free face-painting at the weekends, and the smaller ones (children under 4 feet 9 inches) can play for free in the soft-play area.

Let the kids paint some pottery at The Pottery Shed in Goods Shed Market at MacDonagh Junction.

Take the family bowling at the K-Bowl Family Entertainment Centre in McDonagh Junction.  K-Bowl offers 10pin bowling which can be enjoyed by kids from as young as three years of age.

Catch a Movie!

Who doesn’t love popcorn and a good movie?

Take in a movie at the Kilkenny Omniplex (Fairgreen, Kilkenny). There is a kids’ club with discounted rates at 12 noon on Saturdays and Sundays. This generally runs on the school holidays too.

Alternatively, why enjoy all the fun of the cinema, without ever leaving home, by creating your own home cinema experience! Get the kids involved in setting up the cinema, arranging seating, making tickets etc. then sit back and relax!

Get Reading!

colourful-booksVisit your local library. All libraries in the county have a junior section. Great for a rainy afternoon – go and read with the children or take part in many of the free events and activities that take place.  Check out library opening times before you make plans.

Visit your local bookstore and treat the kids to a new book. Spend time browsing for that special book and go home and read it together.

Go Swimming!

Go swimming at The Watershed where there is a 25m 6-lane pool, a 5m learner pool for adults and children, and a Kiddie’s Fun Pool.  Children under 15 years are welcome in the pool from 9.30am until 7pm.

Children aged 10 years and under must be accompanied in the water at all times by a person over 16 years of age.  Children under 3 years swim for free!

See The Reptiles!

Check out the cool snakes, lizards, etc. at the Reptile Village in Gowran – Ireland’s only reptile zoo!  They also have a play area and a picnic area.

Get Outside

Sometimes, you have just got to get out and get wet!

Put on the raingear and wellies and go for a walk in the rain.  Most kids love splashing in puddles, and sometimes it’s a great way to release pent-up energy from being cooped up inside. Here’s our Top 10 Things to do Outside in Rain for some ideas!

Warm up afterwards with a hot bath/shower, dry clothes and hot chocolate. Then, why not pull out a board-game or snuggle up on the couch with a movie – a perfect end to a wet day!
