Tips on Picking the Best School Bags for Your Child

Picking the right school bag for your child is about more than finding one they’ll be excited to wear on the first day. Comfort, safety and durability matter just as much as style — especially once term gets going and the bag is loaded with books, folders, lunch and all the extras that seem to find their way in.

As a parent of children in both primary and secondary school, I’ve picked up plenty of trial-and-error lessons along the way. Here are the tips that have made the biggest difference in our house, to help you choose a school bag that’s comfortable, safe and built to last.

Picking the Right School Bag for Your Child

#1. Weight of School Books

The weight your child needs to carry varies a lot depending on their school stage, and it’s not unusual to see children heading off with bags that look bigger than they are.

As children move into older classes, it’s worth checking the bag is genuinely ergonomic for their stage — look for padding around the lower back and in the straps, and enough space for everything they need without overstuffing.

It can be tempting to buy a bigger bag “to grow into,” but it’s usually better to buy the right size for what they’re carrying now and upgrade as they move up. Tastes and needs change too, so trying to make one bag last several years often ends up a false economy.

Soft-cover folders and notebooks are lighter than hard-cover versions and can make a real difference over a full school day. In Ireland, schoolbooks in state-funded schools are now provided on a loan basis rather than bought outright, so the books themselves belong to the school and are returned at the end of the year — worth keeping in mind when you’re teaching your child to look after them.

As a general guide, the total weight of a packed school bag shouldn’t exceed 15% of your child’s body weight.

#2. Adjustable Straps

Two shoulder straps are best, as they spread the load more evenly across the back, shoulders and neck than a single strap. Once your child’s bag is packed with everything they need, take a minute to adjust the straps properly.

Too long, and your child will lean forward to compensate. Too short, and they may lean back, putting extra strain on the shoulders and neck. The bag should sit comfortably between the shoulders, centred on the back.

An adjustable waist strap is a great extra feature — it shifts some of the load down into the pelvis and legs, taking pressure off the shoulders and neck.

Everything You Need for the School Year

Along with the bag itself, most families are also sourcing stationery, learning resources and lunch supplies around this time of year. Retailers such as Schoolbooks.ie stock a range of school bags alongside other back-to-school essentials, which can be a handy one-stop option if you’re short on time.

#3. Pockets for Everything

A good school bag has a large central compartment for lighter books, plus a padded rear pocket for a laptop, tablet or the heaviest items. Separate pockets for lunch, a water bottle and stationery help keep things organised and stop everything shifting around together.

Try to distribute weight evenly, with heavier items placed close to the back and lighter ones nearer the front. This keeps your child balanced, rather than being pulled backwards or forwards by an unevenly packed bag.

#4. Weatherproof

Walking, cycling or taking the bus to school is great for building independence, getting some exercise and spending time with friends along the way. But it does mean the bag needs to cope with the weather.

Look for a bag that’s waterproof or comes with a rain cover for the wetter days. It protects everything inside — and saves your child’s back from a soaking too.

#5. Cleaning and Refreshing

Some school bags are machine washable, which makes keeping them fresh over the year much easier — mid-term breaks and holidays are a good time to pop them in. If your child’s bag isn’t machine washable, empty it out and sponge it inside and out with hot soapy water before leaving it to dry fully.

Cleaning time is also a good excuse for a clear-out, and a chance to find all the notes, papers and odds and ends that had quietly disappeared to the bottom of the bag.

#6. Educating Your Child

Anyone who has gone looking for something in their child’s school bag knows the surprises that can turn up — notes that were meant to come home weeks ago, forgotten water bottles, lunch containers you’d assumed were gone for good.

From their very first day at school, it’s worth building the habit of emptying the bag at least once a week. As children move into secondary school, encourage them to only pack the books they actually need for that day rather than carrying everything “just in case.” It’s a small habit that can help protect their back in the long run.

Frequently Asked Questions

How heavy should my child’s school bag be?

As a general rule, a fully packed school bag shouldn’t weigh more than 15% of your child’s body weight. If it’s regularly heavier than that, look at what can be left at home or stored in school where possible.

Are two-strap bags really better than one-strap bags?

Yes — two shoulder straps spread the weight more evenly across the back and shoulders, which is better for posture and reduces strain, especially for children carrying a full day’s books.

How often should we clean the school bag?

Emptying it weekly is a good habit, with a proper wash or wipe-down during mid-term breaks and holidays. It keeps the bag fresh and gives you a chance to clear out anything that’s built up inside.

Should I buy a bigger bag so it lasts several years?

It’s usually better to buy the right size for your child’s current stage rather than sizing up for the future. Needs, weight and even style preferences change quickly as children move through school.
