Family game nights are a brilliant way to get together and have some fun — and honestly, the simplest games are often the ones that get the biggest laughs. When family time is at a premium, you need games you can set up in minutes, not ones that need forty pieces and an instruction manual nobody can find. Check out these 10 insanely easy ideas for a fun family game night and get ready to create some wonderful memories.
While board games are always popular, do you ever find you’ve lost interest by the time you’ve set up the board, reminded everyone of the rules, and gone looking for the missing dice? Keep it simple instead, with family games that need nothing more than pen and paper, or things you probably already have knocking around the house. Extra bonus points for the fact that they can be played anywhere, which makes them perfect for family holidays too.
If you’re a competitive family (ahem, we might be…), why not keep a “Family Game Night” notebook to track the scores from each game night? You could even award an annual champion. But whatever you do, the real point is to have fun together as a family — and to discover which game causes the most chaos and giggles in your house (in ours, it’s Chubby Bunny).

Brilliant Family Game Night Ideas
#1: Pass the Balloon
What do you need? A pack of balloons.
How to play: Blow up a balloon and pass it around the circle from person to person without using your hands. If the balloon touches the floor, you’re out!

#2: Hangman
What do you need? Paper and a pen.
How to play: This classic game works for all ages. One person picks a word, phrase or sentence (choose the difficulty based on who’s playing), and everyone else takes turns guessing letters. Guess right and the letter is filled into its correct spot; guess wrong and a line is added to build the hangman. Guess the full word or phrase before the drawing is complete to win.

#3: Chubby Bunny
What do you need? A bag of marshmallows (full size, not the mini ones).
How to play: Sit everyone in a circle and pass around the marshmallows. On your turn, pop a marshmallow in your mouth and say “chubby bunny” — without swallowing! Keep going round, adding another marshmallow each turn and saying “chubby bunny” again. As cheeks get fuller, it gets a lot harder to say clearly. Last person still talking (and not choking on marshmallow) wins. Fair warning: some dribbling is guaranteed.

#4: Boggle
What do you need? Paper and pens for each player.
How to play: Recreate this classic at home by drawing a 4×4 grid. Fill it with random letters (repeats are fine), then set a timer for two minutes. Each player tries to find as many words as possible using letters that are adjacent horizontally, vertically or diagonally. Whoever has the most valid words when time’s up wins.

#5: Scattergories (or “Stop the Bus”)
What do you need? Paper and pens for each player.
How to play: The aim is to come up with an answer for each category using an assigned letter. Decide how many categories you’ll play (some ideas: boy’s name, girl’s name, country, food, occupation, sport, book title, animal, flower) and draw that many columns on your page. Take turns picking a letter — or flick open a book and point at random — and race to fill in your answers.
Give younger players a head start if they’re still getting used to writing, and the round ends when the first person completes their line. Compare answers and score points: 10 for a unique answer, 5 for matching someone else’s, and none for a blank.
#6: Hot Lava
What do you need? Absolutely nothing.
How to play: Pretend the floor is hot lava and don’t touch it! Get your feet up onto furniture, cushions, or anything else you can find. This one works just as well outdoors or at the playground.
#7: Who Am I?
What do you need? A pack of sticky notes, blank labels, or paper and tape.
How to play: Before you start, write one name on each sticky note — a celebrity, sports star, historical figure, or, for younger players, an animal or cartoon character. Turn the names face down, and have each player pick one without looking and stick it to their own forehead. Take turns asking yes/no questions to figure out who you are — “Am I female? Would I be on television? Do I have superpowers?”

#8: Suck It Up
What do you need? Straws, small sweets (like chocolate buttons or similar), and two small bowls or plates per person.
How to play: Set a timer for one minute. Each player moves their pile of sweets from one bowl to the other by sucking them up through the straw. First to finish wins. Top tip: keep a secret backup stash on hand — some sweets will inevitably get eaten mid-game.
#9: Pictionary
What do you need? Paper and a pen or marker.
How to play: Before you start, write a selection of words, book or movie titles, famous places or people on separate strips of paper, and pop them in a bowl. Split into two teams. One player from each team picks a strip and draws clues for their teammates to guess — no letters, numbers or talking, just pictures. Set a timer, and if the team guesses correctly in time, they score a point. Then it’s the other team’s turn.

#10: Charades
What do you need? Paper and a pen.
How to play: As with Pictionary, fill a bowl with strips of names or things to act out. One player from each team picks a strip and silently acts it out for their teammates to guess. A correct guess within the time limit earns a point, then it’s the other team’s go. Set a target score — first to 10 points wins — or just play to a time limit.

Frequently Asked Questions
What do we need for a family game night?
Almost nothing! Most of these games only need paper, a pen, and things you already have around the house — balloons, marshmallows, straws or sticky notes. That’s what makes them perfect for a spontaneous games night with little to no setup.
How long should a family game night last?
It’s entirely up to you. Many of these games can be played in just a few minutes each, so you can mix and match a handful of them for a half hour of fun, or keep going for a full evening if everyone’s enjoying themselves.
What ages do these games suit?
Most of these games flex easily for different ages — Hangman, Scattergories and Pictionary can all be made easier or harder depending on who’s playing, while games like Hot Lava and Pass the Balloon work well for younger children too.
Can we play these games while travelling or on holiday?
Yes — that’s one of the best things about them. Since most need only paper, pens or nothing at all, they’re ideal for car journeys, rainy days away, or any time you want a quick burst of family fun without carrying board games with you.
