Since baby name records in the US only started in 1880, the folks in Nameberry trawled through research done by Douglas Galbi, of census records from 1800 to 1850, to determine what baby names were popular before 1850.
And whilst expected names like John and Mary were the number 1 names for boys and girls in that time, the other common names of the era are all becoming popular again now. Indeed for the last few years, Emily and Charlotte for girls, and Daniel and James for boys have been in the top 5 of the most popular names.
