Creative Lunchbox Ideas: Googly Grape Face in a Jar

Looking for a lunchbox idea that takes minutes to make but gets a big reaction when the lid comes off? This googly grape face in a jar is one of our favourite creative lunchbox ideas — a handful of grapes, two marshmallows and a bit of icing gel turn an ordinary snack into something that makes kids smile.

It’s a great one to make together too, especially if you’ve got little helpers who love a hands-on kitchen job the night before school.

What You’ll Need

  • Grapes
  • 2 marshmallows
  • Black decorating icing or gel
  • A jar with a lid

How to Make It

1. Add some of your grapes to the jar.

2. Paint a small black dot in the centre of each marshmallow, then stick them inside the jar with the black dot facing outwards, like a pair of googly eyes.

3. Fill the remaining space in the jar with grapes, then pop the lid on.

That’s it — a quick, playful lunchbox extra that takes almost no prep.

A quick safety note: please cut grapes in half (lengthways) for younger children, as whole grapes are a choking hazard.

A Few Tips

  • Use a small, wide-mouthed jar so the “face” is easy to see as soon as the lid is off.
  • Seedless grapes make this easier to prep and eat.
  • If your child’s lunchbox needs to stay cool, tuck the jar in alongside an ice pack — grapes are best served cold anyway.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I make this ahead of time?

Yes — you can prepare the jar the night before and keep it in the fridge until it goes into the lunchbox in the morning.

Is this safe for younger children?

Grapes are a known choking hazard for younger children, so always cut them in half (lengthways, not just in two) before packing them, regardless of how they’re presented.

Can I swap the marshmallows for something else?

Yes — if you’d rather avoid marshmallows, small round crackers or a couple of cherry tomatoes can work as the “eyes” instead, painted or decorated the same way.

What if my child doesn’t like grapes?

The same jar-and-eyes idea works with other small round fruits, such as blueberries or cherry tomatoes, so you can adapt it to what your child actually enjoys eating.
