As we face into the summer holidays, inevitably there will be some rainy days or indeed some days when you’ll need some indoor time if it’s too hot (here’s hoping!). A family movie is a fun thing to do with your child, so here’s our pick for 20 fun family movies on Netflix to enjoy this summer:

It’s a long summer holiday here in Ireland (8 weeks…) and, let’s face it, rainy days are more the norm than not usually. So finding things to do to amuse the kids can be a bit of a chore after the first week of down time.
So one solution is to pop some popcorn, grab a drink, and settle down on the sofa for a movie with the kids.
We’ve checked out what family movies are available on Netflix, and there are some classic family films on the list as well as newer ones to enjoy together.

#1. Missing Link
Tired of living a solitary life in the Pacific Northwest, Mr Link, who is 8 feet tall and covered in fur, recruits fearless explorer Sir Lionel Frost to guide him on a journey to find his long-lost relatives in the fabled valley of Shangri-La. Along with adventurer Adelina Fortnight, the trio encounters their fair share of peril as they travel to the far reaches of the world. Through it all, they learn that sometimes one can find a family in the places one least expects.
#2. The Boy who Harnessed the Wind
The Boy Who Harnessed the Wind tells the story of a 13-year-old boy who is thrown out of the school he loves when his family can no longer afford the fees. He sneaks into the library and learns how to build a windmill to save his village from a famine.
#3. An American Tail
Fieval, a young Russian mouse gets separated from his family during their migration trip to America. Being completely new to the country he lands in, will he be able to trace his family?
#4. Pachamama
New to Netflix, Pachamama is an award-winning animated film that tells the tale of a 10-year-old boy who dreams of coming his village’s shaman.
When a sacred statue is taken from his Andean village, the boy along with his best friend and her smart-talking llama go on a mission to get it back.

#5. Mowgli Lord of the Jungle
Another remake of Disney classic The Jungle Book, in this real life version, human child Mowgli is raised by a wolf pack in the jungles of India. As he learns the often harsh rules of the jungle, under the tutelage of a bear named Baloo and a panther named Bagheera, Mowgli becomes accepted by the animals of the jungle as one of their own, but the fearsome tiger Shere Khan doesn’t take a liking to him. But there may be greater dangers lurking in the jungle, as Mowgli comes face to face with his human origins.
#6. Gnome Alone
In Gnome Alone, a teenage girl moves into a new house in a new town and discovers her house is under attack by underground beasts. After making the discovery, she finds that she and the house gnomes are the only ones who can offer protection to the town.
#7. The Book of Life
The Book of Life tells the story of Manolo, Maria and Joaquin who have been friends ever since childhood. Although their lives have taken different paths – Maria was sent to Europe, Joaquin joined the military, and Manolo studied to become a bullfighter – one thing remains the same: Manolo and Joaquin both want to marry Maria. Little does the trio know that battling husband-and-wife deities have made a high-stakes wager on the love triangle’s outcome.

#8. The Little Prince
The Little Prince is an animated version of the classic children’s book. The Aviator introduces a girl to a world where she rediscovers her childhood and learns that it’s human connections that matter most, and that it is only with heart that one can see rightly; what is essential is invisible to the eye.
#9. The Lorax
Another film adaptation of a Dr Seuss book, The Lorax, tells the story of twelve-year-old Ted who lives in a place virtually devoid of nature; no flowers or trees grow in the town of Thneedville.
Ted would very much like to win the heart of Audrey, the girl of his dreams, but to do this, he must find that which she most desires: a Truffula tree. To get it, Ted delves into the story of the Lorax, once the gruff guardian of the forest, and the Once-ler, who let greed overtake his respect for nature.

#10. Wonder
Based on The New York Times bestseller, Wonder tells the incredibly inspiring and heartwarming story of August Pullman, a boy with facial differences who enters fifth grade, attending a mainstream elementary school for the first time.
#11. Ballerina
In Ballerina, best friends Félicie and Victor hatch a plan to escape from their rural orphanage in 19th-century France. Félicie dreams of becoming a ballerina, while Victor wants to use his brainpower to invent things.
After busting out, Félicie makes her way to the Paris Opera where she joins a class of highly trained dancers who are auditioning for the lead in a production of “The Nutcracker.”
#12. Back to the Future
In the 1980s sci-fi classic, Back to the Future, small-town California teen Marty McFly is thrown back into the ’50s when an experiment by his eccentric scientist friend Doc Brown goes awry.
Traveling through time in a modified DeLorean car, Marty encounters young versions of his parents, and must make sure that they fall in love or he’ll cease to exist. Even more dauntingly, Marty has to return to his own time and save the life of Doc Brown.

#13. Matilda
The film adaptation of Matilda by Roald Dahl tells the story of Matilda Wormwood, a gifted girl forced to put up with a crude, distant father and mother. Worse, Agatha Trunchbull, the evil principal at Matilda’s school, is a terrifyingly strict bully. However, when Matilda realizes she has the power of telekinesis, she begins to defend her friends from Trunchbull’s wrath and fight back against her unkind parents.
#14. The Goonies
The Goonies is an old-fashioned yarn about a band of adventurous kids who take on the might of a property developing company which plans to destroy their home to build a country club. When the children discover an old pirate map in the attic, they follow it into an underground cavern in search of lost treasure but come up against plenty of dangerous obstacles along the way.

#15. The Bee Movie
In The Bee Movie, fresh out of college, Barry the Bee finds the prospect of working with honey uninspiring. He flies outside the hive for the first time and talks to a human, breaking a cardinal rule of his species. Barry learns that humans have been stealing and eating honey for centuries, and he realizes that his true calling is to obtain justice for his kind by suing humanity for theft.
#16. Madagascar
In Madagascar, Alex the lion is the king of the urban jungle, the main attraction at New York’s Central Park Zoo. He and his best friends – Marty the zebra, Melman the giraffe and Gloria the hippo – have spent their whole lives in blissful captivity before an admiring public and with regular meals provided for them. Not content to leave well enough alone, Marty lets his curiosity get the better of him and makes his escape, with the help of some prodigious penguins, to explore the world.
#17. Annie
An orphan in a facility run by the mean Miss Hannigan, Annie believes that her parents left her there by mistake. When a rich man named Oliver “Daddy” Warbucks decides to let an orphan live at his home to promote his image, Annie is selected. While Annie gets accustomed to living in Warbucks’ mansion, she still longs to meet her parents. So Warbucks announces a search for them and a reward, which brings out many frauds.
#18. How to Train Your Dragon
How to Train Your Dragon tells the tale of a hapless young Viking who aspires to hunt dragons becomes the unlikely friend of a young dragon himself, and learns there may be more to the creatures than he assumed.
#19. Chitty Chitty Bang Bang
While truant from school, two young siblings meet the beautiful Truly Scrumptious, who falls for their widowed father Caractacus Potts and his various oddball inventions, including the family’s noisy rebuilt car, Chitty Chitty Bang Bang.
One day at the beach, Caractacus tells Truly and the children a fanciful fable about the villainous Baron Bomburst and his evil designs on the Potts family car.

#20. Kung Fu Panda
In Kung Fu Panda, Po might just be the laziest, clumsiest panda in the Valley of Peace, but he secretly dreams of becoming a kung fu legend. When the villainous snow leopard Tai Lung threatens Po’s homeland, the hapless panda is chosen to fulfil an ancient prophecy and defend the Valley from attack.
