Disney Lorcana will be launching in 2023 and we’ve got a sneak preview of what it’s all about. Think Disney classic characters in collectible card formats with a mysterious game to play!
Find out more about this new game that looks set to become super popular.
Disney Lorcana
Disney Lorcana is a trading card game, or TCG for short, that features Disney characters that live in an all-new world with unique and magical gameplay.
Each trading card shows a Disney character in both original and reimagined art styles.
The new game is set in the rich and fantastical world of Lorcana, a joining of the words “lore” and “arcana”.
Players will take on the role of sorcerers, known as Illumineers, who can access Lorcana’s “The Great Illuminary”, a treasury of all Disney songs and stories ever made. They’ll be able to summon glimmers of characters to adventure with and to do battle on the table.
Lorcana has been developed for Disney by Ravensburger, the game company known for its popular board games such as Labyrinth, Dingbats, El Dorado and Escape. This is their first foray into collectible card games.
First Lorcana Cards Revealed

The first cards for Disney Lorcana were unveiled at Disney D23 earlier in September.
These seven cards feature Elsa, Maleficent (in dragon form), Captain Hook, Cruella De Vil, Stitch and Robin Hood as well as the original Disney character himself, Mickey Mouse. On his card, he wears the Brave Little Tailor costume reminiscent of the classic animated short film that he debuted in in 1938.
Each of the seven debut cards include the name of the character, its cost to bring into play, and its statistics for offense and defense.
Each card also includes a mechanic or special power, as well as a short message in italics drawn from Disney lore.
The Rules of Lorcana Are Not Yet Known
It seems that you will collect cards in booster packs and create decks with the aim of defeating your opponent.
Fans who attended D23 have been placing their cards up for auction.
But as the rules haven’t been released yet, nobody even knows how the game will be played! And lots of people are puzzling over a mysterious icon on the bottom right of each card which seems to indicate its relative power or value.
Hopefully all of this will be made clear once the game’s rules are known.
Watch This Space

For those who have enjoyed other trading card games such as Pokemon, Yu-Gi-Oh! and Magic: The Gathering, they will be interested to hear that the first set of the Disney Lorcana cards is due out in the autumn of 2023: Disney Lorcana: The First Chapter.
Each expansion for Lorcana is apparently part of an ongoing story that will be told across future releases. There may be other experiences as part of the game, such as stories published online.
Whatever is released, one thing is for sure, trading cards have always been popular with kids so prepare your budget for a bit of Disney Lorcana card buying!
My brothers were mad for Panini soccer stickers during the 1990s and then my own children loved collecting Match Attax cards in the late 2000s.
There’s no reason to doubt that Disney Lorcana won’t become super popular next year too going by those auction rates for the pre-release cards anyway!
