Fans of the highly popular Artemis Fowl books will be thrilled to hear that the movie version is slated to come out in August 2019. And the teaser trailer has just arrived – Disney’s Artemis Fowl Announced for 2019:
The Artemis Fowl Series
In case you’re not familiar with them, Artemis Fowl is a series of eight science fiction fantasy novels written by Wicklow-based Irish author Eoin Colfer. The books feature Artemis Fowl II, 12-year-old genius and criminal mastermind.
In the first book, Artemis captures Holly Short, who happens to be a Fairy and captain of LEPrecon (Lower Elements Police Recon), and holds her for a gold ransom to try to exploit the hidden but magical Fairy People and restore his family’s fortune.
The series starts with Artemis as an anti-hero and enemy of the fairies, but as it progresses through the 8 books, Artemis helps the Fairies to resolve conflicts with worldwide ramifications. His character is developed and changes throughout the series.
The 8 books in the Artemis Fowl series include
- Artemis Fowl
- The Arctic Incident
- The Eternity Code
- The Opal Deception
- The Lost Colony
- The Time Paradox
- The Atlantis Complex
- The Last Guardian
Disney’s Artemis Fowl
Disney’s Artemis Fowl comes out in August 2019 and is directed by Kenneth Branagh. The film stars Ferdia Shaw, Lara McDonnell, Tamara Smart, Nonzo Anozie, with Josh Gad, and Judi Dench. (If you’ve never heard of Ferdia Shaw then that’s because the Irish youngster will be making his feature debut in the film, having seen off the challenge of over 1,200 hopefuls to be cast in the lead role.)
However one word of warning, the new movie may not be entirely faithful to the books, going by the comments on the YouTube trailer anyway. So it will be interesting to see what the verdict finally is. Most movie adaptations of books tend to be completely different in my experience!
