ITV’s Downton Abbey became an unprecedented success around the world when it began in 2010 – all the sumptuous luxury, the trials and tribulations of aristocratic life, the upstairs-downstairs relationships, and the witty script worked to create something that hadn’t been done on TV before.
Speculation around a Downton Abbey movie has been rife since the show finished in 2015, however the news has now been officially confirmed:
The big question surrounding a Downton Abbey movie has always been, which of the cast would be reprising their roles? With such a large contingent of pivotal characters, scheduling was always bound to be tricky.
However, it seems that all the big stars will be back, including Hugh Bonneville as Lord Grantham, Dame Maggie Smith as his aristocratic mother the Dowager Duchess, Elizabeth McGovern as Lady Cora, Michelle Dockery as Lady Mary, Joanne Froggett as Anna Bates, and Laura Carmichael as Lady Edith.

The only member of the cast who has confirmed they will not be taking part is Lily James, who played Lady Rose in the drama series. In an interview with People magazine, she explained how her character’s role had really run its course.
“My character Rose moved off to New York, so it would be farfetched to bring her back,” she explained.
Despite not being part of the Downton Abbey movie, Lily James (who starred as Cinderella in the live action remake and will soon be seen in the Mamma Mia sequel) said she is “so excited for it — I’m going to be front row”.
While no release date has yet been announced for the Downton Abbey movie, film production is starting this summer and will hopefully be wrapped and ready for 2019.
