Down Syndrome Limerick provides essential services to people of all ages with Down syndrome and their families. Their mission is to support people with Down syndrome throughout their lives, to help improve it and assist them in reaching their full potential.
Our third charity of the year, Down Syndrome Limerick (DSL) has almost 200 members registered with the branch. Those families can access vital resources such as speech and language, a school support programme and a parent link service.
However, they couldn’t do it without the dedicated parents who voluntarily run DSL. As well as the generosity of individuals, clubs and businesses as the charity doesn’t receive any state funding.
Those funds keep the services (featured below) running, but they’re also used to develop and pilot new projects to enhance the resources DSL offer.
Here’s How to Support Super Services Down Syndrome Limerick Offer
The Parent Link Liaison
The parent link liaison provides a wealth of support and information for parents of children with Down syndrome. It also offers understanding, answers and a listening ear to new parents who have just received a prenatal or postnatal diagnosis of Down syndrome for their baby. The service is confidential and you can find out more about the Parent Link Liaison on their website.
Speech and Language Therapy and Occupational Therapy
Speech and Language, as well as Occupational Therapy, are essential for the development of children and adults with Down syndrome. Over 2000 hours of therapy are delivered to members ordinarily each year.
School support programme
The programme provides guidance and support for parents, teachers and SNAs of children who are in pre-school, primary and secondary education. This includes training and the running of a school readiness programme for children transitioning to primary school.
Adult Education
This service equips adults with the skills and confidence necessary to gain meaningful employment.
Social Classes and Activities
Ordinarily, DSL organises a range of physical and creative activities for people of all ages to try out. These include sports classes such as dance, cycling and swim lessons. For the social and arty sessions, they have a choice of the youth club, drama and art.
