From egg hunts and chocolate overload to Easter baking that ends up (mostly) eaten by the cook, Easter weekend is one of the best times to be a kid. These fun Easter traditions to start with your family will make your time together even more memorable — so make sure to take plenty of photos of those chocolate-covered faces!
In our house, we’re all about tradition, and every year we seem to add something new to the list.
We got ice cream one Easter Saturday when it happened to be sunny — now we get ice cream on Easter Saturday, whatever the weather. Then there was the time I accidentally made an oval-shaped pancake and called it an “Easter egg pancake” so my toddler wouldn’t have a meltdown — and now they’re an obligatory part of the Easter weekend menu.
Some of our crazy family “traditions” might seem a bit silly to other people, but they mean the world to my daughter. She talks about them excitedly for weeks beforehand, and lights up the moment each one rolls around. And isn’t that what it’s all about — creating memories your kids will look back on fondly, and maybe even recreate with their own children one day?

Paint Some Eggs

Take a break from the chocolate egg-stravaganza and try some of these Easter egg decorating ideas to keep little hands busy.

Leave a Note for the Easter Bunny
My daughter loves to leave a drawing or Easter card for the Easter Bunny, along with a treat like a cookie, a carrot or — if she’s feeling generous — a little chocolate egg.
Make an Easter Tree

One of our favourite traditions is creating an Easter tree. We use long twigs and thin branches we find on walks and put them into a tall vase, but you could use an existing house plant if you’d prefer.
Paint the branches, hang your newly decorated eggs from colourful ribbons, or draw and cut out little hand-made eggs and Easter pictures. Add some paper flowers, or a few crafty butterflies, bees and ladybirds for good measure.
Make Easter Baskets
Put together a fun Easter basket for the kids with some non-chocolate treats to enjoy. Ours usually includes a new outfit or item of clothing for Easter, a book, a jigsaw or game, toiletries, stationery and a few little accessories.
Some items get reused every year, like a bunny ears hairband and the basket used for collecting eggs at the hunt.
We leave ours out on Easter Saturday, but in plenty of other homes the Easter Bunny leaves them Sunday morning instead.

Throw an Easter Egg Hunt

This is the ultimate classic Easter activity for kids. Whether it’s indoors or outdoors, it will bring out the laughter in your house — and give you a glimpse of your kids’ competitive side!

Bake (or No-Bake) Some Easter Treats

One of our absolute favourite Easter weekend traditions is baking up a whole range of tasty treats.
Take your pick from cute Easter cookies the kids can make, bunny cupcakes even the littlest chef can help decorate, or give your favourite cupcakes an Easter makeover. It’s all in the decorating!
These Easter bake sale ideas are kid-approved, while these Creme Egg fudge bites are bound to disappear in no time.
For something more traditional, try a fruity Simnel cake, or one of these show-stopping easy Easter desserts — everything from chocolate and caramel to mousse, tarts and meringue.
If baking isn’t your thing, you can still enjoy plenty of no-bake Easter treats. Chocolate nests are a great example:
To make chocolate nests:
- Add 100g butter, 1 tbsp cocoa powder, 50g milk chocolate buttons and 75g golden syrup to a bowl.
- Microwave on high for 1.5 minutes and mix together.
- Crumble 4 Shredded Wheat over the mixture and stir through.
- Spoon a generous amount into each of 12 bun cases to form nests.
- Press the centre of each nest down slightly and place 3 chocolate mini eggs in each dip.
- Chill for 30 minutes before serving.
Another delicious option is chocolate refrigerator cake, or these no-bake caramel slices.
