The Nameberry list of most popular baby names of 2019 is based on the names that get the most views on their website for the first 6 months of 2019. It’s a strong predictor of the names which are most likely to stay popular in the next year or so.
This year’s lists of most popular girls names and most popular boys names feature two new names at Number 1: Archie and Isla!
No surprise on the boys’ names front – Archie has become popular partly thanks to being chosen by the Duke and Duchess of Sussex (Meghan and Harry, of course) for the name of their first baby son. But before you think it’s all just royal baby name popularity, it was actually the fastest rising boy’s name in the US in 2018 and it has been a top 100 name in England since 2000, so it’s been on the rise for a while.
Meanwhile, top of the girls’ names list is Isla. She jumped Olivia to become number 1 for the first time. Always a popular name in its native country Scotland, it’s also been in the top 10 names for Australia, England, Canada for a while now.
Girls names starting and ending in A continue to be popular with 4 out of the top 10 names following this trend: Aurora, Ada, Amara, Amelia.
Some unique girls names have popped up as well – Posie and Ottilie, Imogen, Cleo, and Cordelia.
And then on the boys names side, these unique Latin-originating names joined the top 100 list: Amias, Caius, Cassian, and Ambrose.
