Best Outdoor Places in Wexford for Families
The Three Rocks Trail
The Three Rocks Trail is one of our favourite spots for a picnic in Wexford. Coillte has an 8km long trail across Fort Mountain and Shelmalier and there are plenty of shorter loops for families with picnic areas and great viewing points.
Irish National Heritage Park
Visit the Irish National Heritage Park in Ferrycarrig. It is well laid out and good for all ages. Plenty of places to picnic; one of our favourite picnic spots is past the Viking boats on the way up to the Norman and round towers, it has a great view!
Carrigbyrne Hill
Carrigbyrne Hill is a 5km trail through a forest of mainly coniferous trees. Good for family walking and cycling.
John F. Kennedy Arboretum
The John F. Kennedy Arboretum is a good place to bring the bikes as small legs will get around more easily! It has lovely walks, great trees and you can feed ducks by the pond and watch the fish dart about. There’s also a miniature railway.
The playground has plenty of picnic tables, a cafe, a small maze, a great slide and a house grown out of hedging.

If you get as far as Curracloe Beach on your walk in the Raven Nature Reserve above, it doubled as Omaha Beach in the film ‘Saving Private Ryan’. It, along with Courtown Beach, always has some great gusts for kites.
We have over 200km of beaches in Wexford, no wonder everyone wants to come to the sunny south east! All the beaches offer great opportunities for family fun and outdoor pursuits.
While some of the beaches are recommended for different things like a blue flag, amenities like toilets etc, some beaches are just amazing stretches of sand.
Even stony beaches have a lot to offer being great places for rock pooling, skimming stones and in some cases rock climbing.
So gather all the kids into the car and drive along the coast explore a beach you have never been to.
