There are loads of great places to picnic with the kids around Clare. I much prefer taking a picnic blanket and spreading out in the grass, beach, woods, parks, whatever!…as opposed to restricting myself to picnic areas with tables or benches. But many of the wooded walks in Clare have benches or picnic facilities. Here are some of our favourites:
Cratloe Woods
We love to go there for a walk in Cratloe Woods, have a picnic and then have loads of fun in the playground which has an extra long zip line, an obstacle course, a sand activity station, swings, slides, snake walk, spider rope and everything is made from wood to blend in with the surroundings.
“A great day out for all.”
Dromore Woods
Dromore Woodland Nature Reserve has marked nature trails, the ruins of Cahermacrea Castle, the site of Kilkeen Church, two ring forts and a lime kiln.
Mooghaun Hillfort
Mooghaun Hillfort is one of the largest hillforts discovered in Ireland and a great place to go for a wander and a picnic. “Mooghaun Hillfort so nice we’ve been there twice”
Lisdoonvarna Playground and Lees Road
Another favourite destination simply for the variety of activities while we’re picnic-ing is Lisdoonvarna playground for the kids to play and take a short walk.
Also, Lees Road Sports & Amenity Park has pitches, wooded walks, skateboard park, track and playground.
Finally, Clare is fortunate to have so much coastline, so take your pick of beaches (sandy or rocky) and spread the blanket! Or head to one of the many lakes such as Inchiquin in Corofin.
So, take a look at our Summer Picnic Recipes for some inspiration for different picnic foods and pack up the picnic basket to head out for some fresh air and outdoor fun!
