Workhouse Square
The city’s MacDonagh Junction Shopping Centre, Workhouse Square, has a number of cafés in an indoor courtyard setting. Each café has high chairs, plenty of room for pushchairs and a good selection of items and drinks that are suitable for the younger ones. All are self-service and have plenty of comfortable seating. You can also enjoy free musical entertainment on Saturday and Sunday afternoons.
Cafés include: Bagel Factory/O’Brien’s Sandwich Bar – hot and cold bagel sandwiches, salads, wraps, sandwiches and smoothies, Costa Coffee – wraps, sandwiches, cookies and baked goods and Quigley’s Bakery and Café – sandwiches, soups, hot dishes, desserts and bakery.
Insomnia
Insomnia Café in Market Cross Shopping Centre is spacious and family-friendly and has quite an extensive menu of sandwiches, salads, soups and snacks as well as their coffee and drinks menu.
Kilkenny Design Centre Foodhall
The Foodhall at the Kilkenny Design Centre in the City is an iconic spot for barista coffee, teas or a light lunch. There are also sandwiches and drinks “to go” which is the perfect option for an impromptu picnic in the park across the road at Kilkenny Castle.
Kilkenny Design Centre Restaurant
Upstairs at the Kilkenny Design Centre Restaurant, there is a more extensive menu and plenty of room for pushchairs. They also provide colouring materials on request. It’s a great place to meet with friends for a coffee and you will often see a group of mothers there with their babies in the mornings.
Eddie Rockets
Eddie Rockets in MacDonagh Junction is an American style diner with large red leather booths that fit up to 8 people plus individual jukeboxes on the tables. They serve gourmet hamburgers, subs, salads, nachos and hotdogs. They have a kids’ menu and novelty gifts for kids.
Mario’s Diner
Mario’s Diner in Smithlands Centre, Loughboy (behind Lidl) is a family restaurant serving traditional fish & chips, burgers, southern fried chicken, American style hotdogs and more. They also have a kids’ menu and a play area for the children.
La Rivista
La Rivista at 22 Parliament Street in Kilkenny is a family-friendly Italian restaurant and pizzeria, and is a good option for an evening meal or Sunday lunch. They open at 5pm Monday to Saturday and 12.30pm on Sunday. They have a good children’s menu and are very welcoming towards kids.
Jarrow Cafe at Castlecomer Discovery Park
Enjoy fresh, home baked food at Jarrow Cafe, Castlecomer Discovery Park. Open 7 days a week from breakfast to 5pm, serving breakfast, lunch, snacks and home-baked treats. There’s plenty of choice and good value on the children’s menu which offers small and half-portions of the day’s specials.
The Watergarden
In Thomastown, The Watergarden is a café in a lovely relaxed setting with seating areas both indoors and outdoors. It’s a great place to have a cup of coffee/juice and a treat, or enjoy lunch with plenty of healthy options (soup, salads, sandwiches and hot lunches) for all of the family. There is a selection of books for kids to browse through while waiting. You can stroll through the streamside gardens and visit the kitchen garden which supplies the café with many of its ingredients.
Primo Italian Restaurant
On Waterford Road in Loughboy, Primo serves delicious authentic Italian food and have a very family-friendly environment. They make their own dough on site fresh every day. There is a kid’s menu available with a main, dessert and drink for €8.95. They also have a small play area for children.
The Langton Bar
This award-winning restaurant has a warm, friendly environment and serves a mix of traditional Irish and international cuisine using the finest locally-sourced ingredients. It is very spacious and has highchairs available for kids.
Lemongrass
Lemongrass, located at John’s Bridge at Collegepark, offers healthy, authentic Asian food and is also very accommodating to children and families. They have an extensive menu and fresh, locally-sourced produce plays a big part in all of their dishes.
Paris Texas
At High Street, Collegepark, the gastropub Paris Texas serves traditional American food influenced by the cuisine of the New Orleans French Quarter. They offer a varied kids menu, with a main, side and drink for €6.00. They also serve a baby bowl for €2.00.
The Grapevine
The Grapevine is a wine and tapas bar at Rose Inn Street, Collegepark. They have delicious food and a great, kid-friendly atmosphere. A definite must for tapas-lovers.
