As parents we know how expensive it can be to entertain the kids, so we thought we would put together a list of things to do for free with the children, yes, that are completely free of charge. You know, when you are looking for kids things to do, things to do when bored, the things to do for free! Here’s a list of our favourite free things to do in Westmeath with children:

mullaghmeen forestMullaghmeen Forest

Mullaghmeen Forest has 1,000 acres of forest. It’s a great place to have picnics and there are long and short walks depending on level of fitness.

It leads to the highest point in Westmeath (894ft.).

Located only 8km from Castlepollard.

Multyfarnham

Multyfarnham is a picturesque village, with park, playground, fountain and a loop walk.  Great family area.

Donore Wood, located near Multyfarnham

The wood is situated on the southern shore of Lough Derravaragh (which is north of Mullingar) and has a rich natural and human history. Donore is home for many of our birds and wild animals. Badger, fox and grey squirrel are the more common species. The wood has a rich variety of wild plants found among the grasses and sedges.

Royal Canal – Kilpatrick Bridge

One of our favourite places to visit as a family is the Royal Canal – Kilpatrick Bridge, a longer, relaxing walk of less than eight kilometers along the banks of the Royal Canal and through the hinterlands of historic Mullingar.

Coosan Point

The playground at Coosan Point near Athlone town is a great place to let the little ones let off some steam if you’ve been in the shops.

Lilliput Jonathan Swift Amenity Park

At Lilliput Jonathan Swift Amenity Park, on the shores of Lough Ennell, you will find a Par 3 golf course overlooking the lake, a seasonal coffee shop, boat moorings, trout angling, swimming, woodland walks, and a children’s play area.
