Indoor Play Centres
Let them run off some steam while you have a coffee at one of the indoor play centres such as:
Kool Kidz
Kool Kidz is a soft play centre located on the Ballinagh Road in Cavan Town. They have a 3 lane slide, air guns, soccer and basketball pitches, a climbing wall, laser tag and loads more to keep the children entertained for hours.
Astra Bowl
Or take the family bowling to Astra Bowl, in Townparks, Cavan town – it’s great for burning energy & having a few laughs too! They have 6 bowling lanes, kids bumpers, pool tables, air hockey and driving games. There is also a quiet seated area where parents can sit and have a coffee while the kids play.
Catch a Movie!
Who doesn’t love popcorn and a good movie? Take in a movie at Odeon Cavan, a great way to while away some hours.
Alternatively, why not enjoy all the fun of the cinema, without ever leaving home, by creating your own home cinema experience? Get the kids involved in setting up the cinema, arranging seating, making tickets etc. then sit back and relax!
Go Swimming!
Cavan Swimming Pool & Leisure Complex
Pack up the togs and head for a swim at Cavan Swimming Pool and Leisure Complex in Drumalee. They have a 25m swimming pool with a separate toddler/baby pool, and for the parents there is a steam room, sauna and jacuzzi. The kids will love the dual water slides and astroturf pitches outside!
Bailieborough Swimming Pool & Leisure Centre
The Bailieborough Swimming Pool & Leisure Centre is located on Chapel Road in Tanderagee. They have a 20m swimming pool with a separate pool for toddlers. There is also a sauna, steam room and jacuzzi. Both children and adults cost €6.50 before 8pm.
You could also go for one of the larger hotels – most pools have public swimming times and are open most days of the year.
Cavan County Museum
The Cavan County Museum is located in Kilmore, Ballyjamesduff, Co. Cavan. This museum is a great way to learn more about Cavan’s rich history. The museum houses a range of fascinating artefacts, including the medieval dug out boat and sheela-na-gigs, as well as brilliant galleries on folk life in the late 19th and early 20th Centuries, the great famine, Percy French & the GAA. Look out for the 3-faced Corleck Head! Their amazing WW1 Trench Experience is pictured above. There’s a coffee shop and playground too, if the weather clears up. The museum also offers special family rates.
Get Reading!
Visit your local library. All libraries in the county have a junior section. Great for a rainy afternoon – go and read with the children or take part in many of the free events and activities that take place.
Check out library opening times before you make plans.
Why not stop by your local bookstore and treat the kids to a new book? Spend time browsing for that special book and go home and read it together.
Bear Essentials
At Bear Essentials in Bawnboy, a handmade teddy bear gift shop, you can adopt an original handmade mohair bear or take part in a workshop and make your own. Then enjoy exploring the garden, greenhouses and playground too. They run family events and workshops throughout the year, so keep an eye on what’s on before you visit.
Get Outside
Sometimes, you have just got to get out and get wet!
Put on the raingear and wellies and go for a walk in the rain. Most kids love splashing in puddles, and sometimes it’s a great way to release pent-up energy from being cooped up inside. Here’s our Top 10 Things to do Outside in Rain for some ideas!
Warm up afterwards with a hot bath/shower, dry clothes and hot chocolate. Then, why not pull out a board-game or snuggle up on the couch with a movie – a perfect end to a wet day!
