Are you looking for activities for a rainy day in Laois? Need some ideas for things to do to keep the kids occupied when it’s wet outside? Then we have lots of suggestions here to make your job a little easier!

Indoor Centres

  • Roll n’Bowl Portlaoise, where there is an area for up to 4 years, Soft play over 4 levels for 4 – 12 year olds, Roller Disco, Indoor Soccer, Bowling, Laser Quest, and “Make your own Teddy Bear”.  There is a snack cafe and baby changing facilities. When the rain stops there is crazy golf outside.
  • Clown Around in Portarlington, is an indoor play centre and has lots of activities.

Catch a Movie!

Who doesn’t love popcorn and a good movie?

Go to a movie at the Odeon Cinema, Portlaoise. There is a kids’ club with discounted rates at the weekends

Alternatively, why not enjoy all the fun of the cinema, without ever leaving home, by creating your own home cinema experience! Get the kids involved in setting up the cinema, arranging seating, making tickets etc. then sit back and relax!

Get Reading!

Visit your local library. All libraries in the county have a junior section.  Great for a rainy afternoon – go and read with the children or take part in many of the free events and activities that take place.  Check out library opening times before you make plans.

Mountmellick library has a junior book club and lovely facilities including a coffee dock and an exhibition gallery. Other branches are in Portlaoise, Portarlington, Mountrath, Rathdowney, Stradbally, Timahoe, Ballylinan, Borris-in-Ossery, Durrow and Abbeyleix, with plenty of books for readers of all ages, plus fun activities every week in the summer.

Go Swimming!

Go swimming at Portlaoise Lei sure Centre where there is a 25m 6-lane pool, a 5m learner pool for adults and children, and a Kiddie’s Fun Pool.  There is “Inflatable Time” on Saturday 1 – 2pm & 5 – 6 pm, and Sunday 1 – 2 pm.

Portarlington also has a good Leisure Centre with a 25m pool, a 7m learner poor and a cafe.

Get Outside

Sometimes, you have just got to get out and get wet!

Put on the raingear and wellies and go for a walk in the rain.  Most kids love splashing in puddles, and sometimes it’s a great way to release pent-up energy from being cooped up inside. See our Top 10 Things to do Outside in Rain for inspiration!

Warm up afterwards with a hot bath/shower, dry clothes and hot chocolate. Then, why not pull out a board-game or snuggle up on the couch with a movie – a perfect end to a wet day!
