Get Reading!

When spending a day in the rain just does not appeal to you, another option is to head to your local library. Children are full of questions and  the library is the one place they are guaranteed to find those answers- in a book!

All libraries now cater for young children as well as school age. With a vast array of books of books to choose from, let your child lose themselves in the joy of choosing their own book.

Many libraries offer free events or activities such as storytime and run bookclubs. As Groucho Marx said “Outside of a dog, a book is a man’s best friend”.

Go Swimming

I have yet to meet a kid who doesn’t love splashing in water so swimming pools are always a hit!

With a child’s swim costing about €4 it is an inexpensive way to spend an afternoon yet provides a fun activity that promotes good health and social development skills.

The Waterfront Pool and Leisure boasts a main deck level 25m pool with a deep end of 1.95m.  It has a separate shallow learner pool with steps for easy access.  There is a sauna and Steam Room (over 16′s only). It also has disability access to the main pool and a comprehensive swimming lesson program.

Get Outside

Jumping in Puddles

You know the saying – if you can’t beat them, join them! So go grab those wellies and raincoats and head outside. Act your shoe size, not your age and jump in those puddles!

Kids love seeing their parents being careless and carefree. It’s nothing a hot shower and load of washing won’t sort out but the joy and laughter you all will share will be worth it!

Have a game of catch or football. Slipping and sliding all over the place will just add to the fun. Or get a paper plate and sprinkle a few drops of different coloured food colouring on it. As you walk in the rain, swirls of fantastic colours will form.

Create your own masterpiece on the footpath with chalk. Chalk looks more paintlike when wet so the colours will appear more vivid. Then later, as you sip your hot chocolates, watch it being washed away leaving you a blank canvas for the next wet day.
