Indoor Centres

Planet Family Entertainment Centre, Athlone

The Planet Family Entertainment Centre in Athlone is the perfect place for a family day out when the weather isn’t so nice. They have a wide range of activities on offer, including Ten Pin Bowling and Quasar 2000, as well as Astro-Turf Soccer pitches, American Pool, Snooker, and the very latest in Video Game Simulators. Their ‘Adventureland’ soft play area has slippery slides, rope bridges, pulleys and a huge ball pool, with a separate section for children under 5.

Rock ‘n’ Bowl

If the weather is wet and miserable, Rock ‘n’ Bowl in Mullingar has ten pin bowling with smaller balls for kids and ramps for lifting the balls. They also have the ‘Jungle Joes’ Kids Play Area, perfect for kids up to 12 years with a huge variety of play equipment, including astral and spiral slides, a football pitch, a maze, rope bridges, ball pools and much more. They offer special morning prices for mothers and toddlers. As well as this, they have Kids Go Karting and an American-style Diner.

Jump4Joy Adventure Centre

Located in the Monksland Industrial Estate, Athlone, Jump4Joy is great adventure centre for children under 12 years with a huge variety of activities for kids. They have bouncy castles, crazy golf, bungee trampolines, bumper cars, as well as an inflatable adventure island, mega slides, air hockey, pool and more. They also have special Parent and Toddler rates. Parents can relax in their J4J Café while the kids play.

Kidz & Co.

Kidz & Co. Indoor Adventure Play Centre in Mullingar has some great facilities for children on a rainy day. Their soft play area has slides, bridges, a separate toddler area and much more. There is even comfy seating for parents and a café for them to have a tea or coffee which also serves healthy food.

Catch a Movie!

Who doesn’t love popcorn and a good movie?

There are two IMC cinemas, one in Mullingar and one in Athlone. They both have a kids’ club with discounted rates on weekends and during school holidays. They also offer special kids meals too.

Alternatively, why not enjoy all the fun of the cinema, without ever leaving home, by creating your own home cinema experience! Get the kids involved in setting up the cinema, arranging seating, making tickets etc. then sit back and relax!

Get Reading!

Visit your local library. All libraries in the county have a junior section. Great for a rainy afternoon – go and read with the children or take part in many of the free events and activities that take place.  Check out library opening times before you make plans.

Westmeath has library branches in Athlone, Mullingar, Moate, Kilbeggan, Killucan, Castlepollard and Ballynacarraigy, with plenty of books for readers of all ages, plus fun activities every week in the summer.

Go Swimming!

Mullingar Swimming Pool

There is a public swimming pool in Mullingar which is family-friendly and has swimming lessons available. This 25 metre pool has a viewing balcony and a sauna. There are als 3 large family cubicles for added privacy.

Athlone Regional Sports Centre

Athlone Regional Sports Centre in Curragh offers a superb 25 metre swimming pool with six lanes. There is also a separate Toddlers Pool along with a poolside Jacuzzi, Sauna and Steam-Room. The swimming pool is open seven days a week. They have lots of kids activities, including family fun sessions, a giant pool fun slide and water games and competitions.

Athlone Castle

Athlone Castle and Visitor Centre, located on the west side of Athlone Town, on the banks of the River Shannon is a great idea for a family day out. First built in the 12th century, Athlone Castle has a rich and fascinating history. There are eight interactive and multi-sensory exhibitions which tell the castle’s story, perfect for families. The 3D maps, audio-visual installations and illustrations bring the stories and characters of Athlone to life. There is a picnic area in the courtyard for if the weather does improve. Children under four go free.

Get Outside

Sometimes, you have just got to get out and get wet!
