Welcome parents of older children, we have compiled some ideas of things to do round Galway.  If we have missed anything out, please let us know!

Indoor Activities

Art & Crafts

  • At Judy Greene’s Pottery Workshop at Kirwan’s Lane, Galway, they have great pottery workshops where you can paint your own pot.
  • Galway Art School offers art activities and classes for both children and teens. All art classes are suitable for complete beginners.

Bowling/Laserquest

The Planet Family Entertainment Centre at the Galway Shopping Centre, Headford Road in Galway, has teen bowling or family bowling available. They also offer laser tag, with 10 built-in game missions, including everything from standard games to ‘Fast and Furious’ to ‘Vampire.’

Fun & Fitness

  • Indoor rock climbing is one of the most popular and adrenaline-pumping sports you can do, so why not check out the climbing wall at the Kingfisher at NUI Galway?
  • Pure Skill in Knocknacarra is a 25,000 sq ft indoor sports and leisure activity centre.

Outdoor Activities

Adventure Sports

  • The Adventure Centre at Delphi Mountain Resort has over 25 ocean, forest, and Mountain based activities with Summer Camps and Family Adventure holidays
  • Killary Adventure Company has a wide range of activities suitable from the complete beginner to the more experienced, from age 8, with family breaks available also.
  • Petersburg Outdoor Education Centre has many exciting outdoor adventure sports activities and challenging expeditions for all age group located in Clonbur, Co. Galway

Cycling

There are several places in Galway that are ideal for a cycle:

  • On the Prom at Salthill
  • At Renville Park, Oranmore
  • There are lots of cycling trails in Portumna Forest Park

Karting

  • At Pallas Karting in Tynagh, you can experience the thrill of real motor racing first hand on their motor circuits.
  • Galway City Karting is located in the Liosban Industrial Estate and has a 20,000 sq ft indoor track.

Rollerblading and Skateboarding

There are a few good spots for rollerblading and skateboarding:

  • at the Millennium Park near the Cathedral
  • on the Prom at Salthill
  • at Rinville Park, Oranmore
  • Loughrea playground
  • Doughiska playground, An Sean Baile

Water Sports

Canoeing

Corrib Canoe Courses are brilliant if you are want to learn how to canoe or just experience Galway from the water! No experience necessary.

Diving

At Galway Dive School, you can learn how to scuba dive in the beautiful waters around Galway!

Sailing

Galway Bay Sailing Club (www.gbsc.ie) is open to all ages and skill levels to experience the world of sailing.

Swimming

There are several great swimming pools in Galway for a fun day out:

  • Leisureland
  • Kingfisher Renmore
  • The Connacht Hotel (buy a day pass)

Windsurfing

Rusheen Bay Windsurfing provides a range of activities, such as windsurfing, kayaking and stand up paddleboarding.

Fishing

Spiddal Angling School can take you fly fishing, fly casting, spinning and teach you the art of fly-tying off Spiddal Pier. Courses can suit both beginners and improvers. Caters for 9-17 years in the summer months.

Watching Sport

Racing

  • Greyhound Racing is on every Friday and Saturday evenings at the Galway Greyhound Stadium, College Road.
  • Horse racing takes place at Ballybrit every July, September and October.

Soccer

Galway United FC plays at Terryland Park.

Rugby

There are 3 clubs in Galway:

  • Connacht Rugby
  • Corinthians
  • Galwegians

GAA

Fixtures in Galway can be found on the Galway GAA website.

Cinemas

  • Eye Cinema, Wellpark
  • IMC Cinema, Headford Road
  • IMC Cinema, Oranmore

StoryTelling

Rab Fulton tells Celtic Tales in the Crane Bar in Galway City every Thursday at 8pm. Be warned, the stories are not suitable for younger children! The storytelling sessions for 2019 take place from May 2nd to November 28th.

Clubs & Associations

  • Foroige provides local youth services. Their youth clubs are a safe place for young people to meet and hang out.
  • Scouting Ireland, for Beavers, Cub Scouts and Scouts.
  • Irish Girl Guides, for Ladybirds, Brownies & Guides.
