#1. The Unstoppables

apps for kidsFour friends Mai, Jan, Achim and Melissa (each with a handicap they have to deal with in everyday life, e.g. blindness or being chairbound) must free their beloved guide dog Tofu from the hands of his kidnapper.

The friends won’t let their differences get in their way. Only through great teamwork will they be able to overcome the various obstacles.

Your job is to help “The Unstoppables” through a series of challenging puzzles to help them track down the mysterious thief.

Free. Rated 4+, made for ages 9–11.

“This was a fun game trying to recover the rescue dog. I liked how each of the characters had their own strengths, and you needed to think whose talent would suit a task best. I did find that some of the characters moved a bit too slow.” Reviewed by James, aged 10.

#2. On The Farm ~ Touch, Look, Listen

apps for kidsTouch, Look, Listen is a series of preschool learning apps for tablets and mobile phones that will delight and encourage young children as they learn their first words.

On the Farm introduces early learners to over 85 animals and objects from tractors and hay to cows, sheep and pigs. It’s also the perfect app for parents and little ones to share, combining photographs, simple word labels and friendly narration. In addition, you can turn the app into a language-learning tool for students of all ages, simply by choosing a second language in the menu.

On the Farm is just like a real book, so it’s easy to find your way around. Each page is introduced by a playful rhyme, while bright and colorful images pop-up magically as each 3D scene opens. When your child taps a picture, they see and hear the associated word, making this a powerful tool for learning new words as well as reinforcing those they already know.

“ We liked the simple, clear illustrations, the good selection of words, the quiz activity. and professional narration. It’s also easy to use, with no distracting elements. 2 language mode (there are 5 language versions in all). We didn’t like that there was only linear navigation/no page selector. #4. Transformers: Robots in Disguise

apps for kidsThe Insecticons are everywhere and the Transformers need your help to defeat them! The Transformers: Robots in Disguise app lets you take control of your favourite Transformers, collect energon, and unlock power modules to gear up and defeat the Insecticons.

Other than for downloading and updating the game, Transformers Robots in Disguise game does not require an internet connection (3G or WiFi) and it has no in app purchases.

Free. The app is rated 9+ for infrequent/mild cartoon/fantasy violence, made for ages 9-11.

“I really liked this game, as it was a good battling game, and you can change characters regularly, which other games often don’t allow. My only fault that you couldn’t go directly from mission to mission, you had to go back to menu each time. ” Reviewed by Christian aged 9.

#5. Miss Hollywood Showtime – Pet House Makeover

Just like fashion, Miss Hollywood knows that a little creativity can solve any problem. It’s time to help the pets compete in talent shows, and win prizes that will turn the shelter from glum to glam! It’s Showtime!

In the Miss Hollywood Showtime app you’ll perform in different pet talent show challenges and show off your inner fashionista in pet dress-up show challenge. There’s also a trampoline, singing and cannonball challenge.

#6. Simple Machines by Tinybop

Destroy a castle with a lever but beware of the dragon! Make music in a pinball arcade with inclined planes. Send satellites into orbit with a set of pulleys. Lift sloshing fish tanks with screws. Travel through a wondrous world with a wheel and axle. Split an iceberg of mirrors with a wedge.

Kids can alter and test each machine to learn about force and motion, actions and reactions, inputs and outputs, conservation of energy, mechanical advantages, and tradeoffs. A free downloadable companion to the app, the Simple Machines Handbook, highlights activities for demonstrating, making, and discussing simple machines.

#7. Little Alchemy

little alchemyLittle Alchemy is an app and online game where you start with 4 basic elements and mix them to start creating more things.

It’s all about mixing elements to create interesting, fun and surprising items. Every combination is a little puzzle to solve. Your objective is to reach 510 elements at the end.

As well as being available in app format you can play on desktop at the Little Alchemy official website and if you sign in you can sync across devices too.

“It’s a bit addictive. It’s fun to experiment and see what each pair of elements makes. I liked trying to reach the goal of 500 items.” Reviewed by Fern (10).

#8. The Foos Coding

#8. Prehistoric Mystery

apps for kidsIn the Prehistoric Mystery app, mankind’s very first criminal investigation by Lucy, a young detective, and her funny pet bird, Darwin the dodo. Lucy and Darwin live with Lucy’s old uncle, Hermit, far away from the different tribes which hate each other and and never stop fighting. But Lucy will have to help them and solve the mystery of the various thefts which have taken place in their camps.

Take part in this prehistoric investigation and help out Lucy and Darwin. Your child will be able to read, learn and play all at the same time.

With Caillou as their guide, preschoolers can develop hand-eye coordination while looking for hidden objects in colourful scenes around town. There are mini games to play and hidden objects to find.
