Family Walks in Monaghan
#1. Rossmore Forest Park
Located 3.5km south west of Monaghan Town on the R189, Rossmore Forest Park has several cycling trails and 6 walks to choose from, ranging from 0.8km (30 mins) to 8km (2.5 hrs) in length. Particualr favourites include the Castle trail, which passes by the ruins of Rossmore Castle, the fish hatchery, the walled garden and beyond to a beautiful 500m yew tree avenue; the various lake trails; and the Nature Trail, which runs through the woods near the car park and has several picnic sites and marked spots of interest. This trail is paved and accessible for wheelchair users and buggies.
Rossmore Forest Park also boasts an amazing adventure play park for children up to 12 years of age that includes swings, zip lines, climbing frames, see-saws, log piles, willow tunnels, and bee hive huts all waiting to be explored. And don’t miss the giants! Roddy den Drum overlooks the lake and Big Ross is asleep under the playground with only his head and feet visible!

#2. Lough Muckno Leisure Park
Lough Muckno Leisure Park in Castleblayney is a great place to take the family walks. It has walking trails as well as nature walks and picnic area. It is open all year around and no admission fee.
#3. Carrickmacross Looped Walks
There are 5 varied looped walks to try in the market town of Carrickmacross, including an easy 4km town and lakeside walk; a 9.5km leafy ramble taking in castles, forts and an ancient monastery; and the more challenging 32km Pilgrim’s Way Tin Church trail past caves, lakes and countryside.

#4. Ulster Canal Greenway
This 4km walk cross from one side of Monaghan town to the other, following the tow path of the abandoned Ulster Canal. Along the way you will see bridges and locks, as well as a mix of rural and urban landscapes.
#5. Emy Lough
This 4km looped walk around the picturesque Emy Lough is suitable for all levels of fitness and is a mix of minor roads and a lakeshore path.
Start at the car park, where you will also find a picnic area and play area for children.
#6. Ballybay Wetlands
There are a number of scenic walks through the 65 acres of wetlands, just outside the town of Ballybay. These wetlands are recognised as being regionally important as a site for wintering migratory bird life, including the Whooping Swan and the Siberian Widgeon. The centre is also a year round refuge for a wide spectrum of waterfowl and wildlife.
#7. Castle Leslie
Castle Leslie in Glaslough is another great place to breathe in fresh country air and take in the stunning scenery as you stroll around in the woods or by the lakes. There are a whole host of exceptional walks, from short jaunts to long leisurely strolls on the Estate.
