While we may not get tropical weather that leads to a summer of sun, it turns out there are heaps of outdoor pools scattered across Ireland. Whether tidal, heated or lakeside, there are lots of outdoor swimming pools in Ireland to choose from – and fingers crossed for some summer sun!

Located in the heart of the Gaeltacht, Cúil Aodha (Coolea) is a heated, chlorinated pool located near Macroom offering daily swims throughout the summer months. The outdoor swimming pool offers swimming lessons for all levels and water safety programmes.

Located in the Carrignavar, north Cork is the volunteer, community run, heated outdoor pool offering daily swims throughout the summer months.

Open from early June to late August, Bagenalstown is an excellent attraction for families and children to cool off in the summer months. You’ll find a heated, outdoor 25m pool and paddling pool.

The club also offers swimming lesson for adults and kids, and hosts swimming galas and open water races throughout the summer.

The West End Pool, Co Donegal

West End Pool Donegal

The West End Pool isn’t your standard swimming pool, it is a large manmade sea water pool located on the coastal path of Bundoran. For obvious reasons, it’s not heated nor is it wheelchair or buggy friendly.

The bathing pool is free, however you will need to check out times of opening locally as the edge sweeps directly into the surrounding sea.

Lough Derg, Portumna, Co Galway

Located at Lough Derg Water Recreation Park you will find a well maintained lakeside swimming pool, complete with a shallow area cordoned off for small children.

Toilets, showers and changing areas are available on site, as well as ample car parking. Lifeguards can be found on duty during the summer months and entry is completely free.

Castlerea Outdoor Swimming Pool is a fantastic amenity managed and operated by Roscommon County Council.

Supervised by fully trained lifeguards, the 33m outdoor, heated pool is open from Wednesday to Sunday throughout most of June, July and August. Other facilities include well maintained individual changing cubicles and showers.

Tidal pools are rare in existence on the Emerald Isle but if you find yourself on the coastal roads of Belmullet in the warm summer months, make sure you stop off to see their impressive 20-metre pool.
