Play Centres in Limerick
Make your way to one of Limerick’s indoor play centres where you can enjoy a coffee while the kids let off some steam.
- Fun World, located on Ennis Road has a 10 pin bowling alley where game is €5.00 per person. They also have arcade games, snooker and pool tables.
- Tons of Fun have several soft play areas for different ages, a multi-sensory area, a mini soccer pitch and even a quiet playhouse area! There’s a cafe with free wifi for parents to enjoy a coffee. There is also free parking and baby change facilities.
- Kidstown in Gillogue, Corbally have soft play areas which incorporate the fascinating local history, and low impact ‘splat ball’ – paintball without the bruises!
- Dreamland is an all-inclusive specially designed play centre that accommodates special needs children in a magical play area. You can fly a plane, go to the teddy bear hospital, visit their supermarket and much more!
Go Swimming
What better way to spend a wet day, than at Aura Grove Island Leisure Centre in Limerick. They have a learner pool and heated baby pool, as well as a jacuzzi, steam room and sauna for the parents. They also have Family Fun Swim events with water based inflatable bouncy castles, treasure hunts and raft races for all the family to enjoy together – sounds like perfect fun for a rainy day!
Jumplanes
For children over five, visit Jumplanes Indoor Trampoline Centre in Delta Retail Park to bounce around to your heart’s content on their open lane trampoline park! 55 minutes bouncing costs just €8 per person on weekdays and €10 on weekends.
Adventure Sports
For an exciting fun family day, head to Nevsail Watersports, Limerick City. They offer indoor rock climbing, kayaking/canoeing, abseiling, surfing, raft building and many more exciting activities.
For the indoor rock climbing, they have both kids/teens sessions for €12.50 and adult sessions for €15 available every Saturday from 10:00am – 11:30am or from 11:30am – 1pm. They also run birthday parties.
Jurassic Parrr
Enjoy some mini golf with a twist at Jurassic Par in Delta Retail Park, a unique, 18-hole UV Crazy Golf Course. Not only are the golf holes named after dinosaurs but it’s all glow in the dark! Suitable for all ages and skill levels.
Limerick Arena
Why not take a trip to University Arena, the biggest indoor sports facility in the country? They have an Olympic-sized pool, four full sized playing courts catering for Basketball, Badminton, Volleyball and Indoor Soccer as well as a 60m, 6 lane indoor sprint track and Health Suite (Sauna, Steam-room). There are lots of classes and activities running there throughout the year.
Catch a movie at Limerick Cinemas
Who doesn’t love popcorn and a good movie?
Take in a movie at the Cinema with lots of popcorn and some ice cream at one of the cinemas in Limerick:
- The Omniplex (near Crescent shopping centre)
- Odeon Cinema (near Castletroy Shopping Centre)
- Vue Cinema (Ennis Road Retail Park)
- Lime Tree Theatre (Mary Immaculate College, Courtbrack Avenue) has children’s theatre shows as well as an art house cinema.
Alternatively, why not enjoy all the fun of the cinema, without ever leaving home, by creating your own home cinema experience! Get the kids involved in setting up the cinema, arranging seating, making tickets etc. then sit back and relax!
Pay a Visit to the Library
Visit your local library. All libraries in the county have a junior section. Great for a rainy afternoon – go and read with the children or take part in many of the free events and activities that take place. Check out library opening times before you make plans.
Or why not visit your local bookstore and treat the kids to a new book. Spend time browsing for that special book and go home and read it together.
Enjoy Some Heritage in Limerick
King John’s Castle
The 13th-century King John’s Castle delivers a modern visitor experience with a dramatic history of over 800 years of fascinating stories about the castle, all brought to life in a stunning and interactive new exhibition. Touch-screen technology connects you to tales of siege and warfare. A dazzling array of computer generated imagery, animations and ghostly projections are all part of the experience.
Try on historic costumes including 18th century dresses or chainmail tunics. 3D models, discovery drawers and audio visuals help you to delve into the Castle’s history. The busy Castle courtyard is home to a medieval campaign tent, a blacksmith’s forge and scenes from a 17th century siege.
The Hunt Museum
The Hunt Museum in Limerick has one of Ireland’s greatest private collections of art and antiquities, dating from Neolithic times right up to the 20th Century, and is well worth a visit whatever the weather! Take one of their regular guided tours or explore the exhibition yourselves. They run regular events and camps for children, including an Art & Craft Club on first Sunday of every Month from February to December. Admission is free.
Get Outside
Sometimes, you have just got to get out and get wet!
Put on the raingear and wellies and go for a walk in the rain along the sides of Shannon River or for a forest walk.
