Marie Kondo, author of the worldwide bestseller The Life-Changing Magic of Tiding Up, has a lot to answer for in my house. I got a little obsessed with her Netflix series Tidying Up With Marie Kondo a few months ago and followed her advice to take EVERYTHING out of all the cupboards and wardrobes to see what “sparks joy”.
The idea is that you only keep what you love – donating or disposing whatever’s left. All I can say, is that it was definitely not joyful in our house when it took me weeks and weeks to actually put everything away again (much to my minimalist husband’s frustration)!
However, in the painstaking process to Konmari my clothes, I did learn to appreciate Marie Kondo’s techniques. The fact that my nine-year-old did too was an added bonus. Now, all her clothes are folded in the file method that Marie uses and it surprisingly didn’t take much prompting to keep the system going. Rest assured, the rest of her room is a pigsty and the thought of organising her toys scares the life out of me, but I’m going to pick my battles on this one.

Marie Kondo Introduces Kiki and Jax
Mum-of-two Marie announced her latest project on Instagram, with the caption: “Introducing Kiki & Jax, my upcoming children’s picture book co-written and illustrated by @salinayoon. It’s a timeless story about friendship, and I hope that the characters of Kiki and Jax will inspire children and families to tidy and embrace joy! The book launches on November 5, but you can preorder it wherever books are sold – and on konmari.com – starting today.”
The 40-page book for 3-7 year olds is an endearing story about two best friends who couldn’t be more different: Kiki is a collector and Jax is a sorter.
The one thing they always agree on is how much fun they have together. But when Kiki’s things start getting in the way, they have to figure out how to make room for what’s always sparked joy – their friendship.
If you want to see if your kids becoming cleaning sensations, you’ll have to wait for your copy of Kiki & Jax: The Life-Changing Magic of Friendship until the November 5th release date, or you can pre-order the book in stores and online. Imagine if the miraculous powers of Marie Kondo meant our kids’ rooms were actually….TIDY?!
