It’s always fascinating to see what baby names parents are choosing for their newborns – and it’s also inspiration for expectant parents trying to make that big decision. The Central Statistics Office (CSO) has released the most popular baby names in Ireland of 2021, ranking the names that had been chosen by the most parents throughout the year.

Read on to find out the top baby names in Ireland last year!

Most Popular Baby Names in Ireland

Jack has continued on the top spot as the most popular baby boys’ name in 2021, a position it has held since 2007 except for 2016, when James was the most popular choice.

This is the first time that Fiadh has taken the number one spot for baby girls names, climbing from second place in 2020 and third in 2019. Grace had been the most popular name for baby girls in 2020 with Emily being the most popular prior to this since 2011.

Changes in the Baby Names Rankings

There were ten new entrants to the top 100 for boys:

  • Teddy
  • Daithí
  • Páidí
  • Jaxon
  • Brody
  • Ted
  • Hunter
  • Tadgh
  • Tiernan and
  • Arlo.

Ted was also the name rising most in popularity, jumping from 139th place to 90th between 2020 and 2021. Similarly, Hunter moved up the ranks from 129th place in 2020 to 91st in 2021.

There were three new entrants to the top 100 for girls:

  • Indie
  • Ayla and
  • Lottie.

Croía has grown most in popularity, rising from 95th place in 2020 to 52nd in 2021. That’s a jump of 43 places in rank. Indie jumped in popularity from 106th place in 2020 to 78th place in 2021.

There is also a wider variety in girls’ names registered in 2021 4,741 compared with 3,863 for boys.

Most Popular Around the Country

Girls Names by County CSO

Some counties picked names outside the top five, or even outside the top 20.

For girls, Fiadh was the most popular name nationally but Grace was popular in some Munster locations, Donegal, Wicklow, Offaly and Laois. Sophie was the top name in Dublin City while Sophia came joint top in Fingal yet nationally they were ranked 4th and 14th respectively. Annie ranked 46th nationally but was first choice in Cavan, while Ella came top in Galway, ranked 10th nationally. Eabha ranked 5th nationally but held top spot in Leitrim.

For the boys, Thomas was ranked 15th nationally, yet was most favoured in Mayo. While Adam held 26th place nationally, it was the most popular choice for boys in Cork City. Liam was ranked 6th nationally, while Michael came 11th, but both names were most favoured in Galway City.
