Picking a name that reflects a Saint is part of making your Confirmation and, as this list shows, that doesn’t have to be an old-fashioned or out-dated name. The range of choice from thousands of saints certainly means there is something for everyone.

Those making their Confirmation this year might even spot a few of their favourite Harry Potter-inspired names on the list…yes, there really is a St Hermione and a St Severus!

As a candidate for the Sacrament of Confirmation, there are two options for the choice of your Confirmation name.

1. Stay with your own baptismal name, your usual first or middle name. If your own name is that of a recognised, canonised saint, there’s no need to select a new religious name for Confirmation.
2. You can pick a saint’s name that inspires you. You might feel a connection with a saint because of their patronage for a topic you are familiar with or identify with, or because you admire their life.

Different dioceses may have different customs, so your priest or confirmation organiser will guide you on this. Whatever name you take, you should choose it not just because you like the sound of the name but because you admire and want to honour that saint. Spend some time researching your saint and learning about them. Consult your family as well.
