#7. Moisture is Not Always Good
Keeping moisture away from your salad greens, green leafy vegetables and mushrooms, will keep these vegetables fresh for longer. Consider storing them in a paper bag or in a dish and loosely covering with a paper towel.
#8. Store Bananas Apart
Bananas can produce excess amounts of Ethylene gas, a major contributor of spoiling fruit and vegetables. So store them away from your other produce.
#9. Only Wash Just Before Eating
For grapes, berries mushrooms, tomatoes and other salad produce only wash before you are going to use them as washing too far in advance adds moisture and can make produce spoil more quickly.
#10. Onions, Garlic and Potatoes
Store separately. Each should be stored in a cool, dry cupboard or shelf and should not be refrigerated. Both onions and garlic can be stored by hanging them from string but the bulbs need to be kept apart if possible.
#11. Aluminium Foil
You will prolong the life of celery by storing it wrapped in aluminium foil. It will also keep a partially used onion fresh for longer if you store it wrapped in aluminium foil. And some friends wrap the top of their bananas in foil to stop the ethylene gas they produce escaping.
If you grow your own produce and want to keep your fruit and vegetables usable for a longer time, consider pickling or cooking and freezing them to add to dishes year round.
And remember by meal planning and creating a shopping list you are less likely to buy more than you need and along with saving money, you will also reduce food waste.
