As we head into February, there are plenty of hot baby names predictions for the year ahead. Nameberry, one of the most popular baby name websites has published their list of 50 most intriguing baby names predicted to be popular in 2017. Is your baby’s name on this list?
For this list of intriguing names, Nameberry looked at the names that they can see are getting hotter, cooler, trendier, and a lot more visible in the year ahead.
Nameberry looked at which names clocked the greatest rise in page views in the first month of 2017 compared with last January. There are some interesting developments as a whole new list of hot new names signals a major cultural shift in 2017.
Amara is the only name to continue over from 2016’s hot list. But many of the hottest baby names of 2017 pick up on trends and sounds that were hot last year. 2017’s Calista, for instance, takes over for 2016’s Celeste. Similarly, Ines is the new Elise, Kyra the new Kaia, and Tahiti is an update on Thea.
They see the same patterns with boys’ names, with Alden taking over for Aiden, Aurelius replacing Augustine, Kane and Koa taking the place of Kai, Mateo appearing instead of Micah.
Vowel names are going down in popularity, this year, only seven of the girls’ names and five of the boys’ names start with vowels, compared to 40% of last year’s girls and 50%+ of boys names starting with vowels.
Interestingly more names are coming from around the world, the 2017 hot list includes the Russian Tatjana and Natasha, Alizeh from Persia, Lucien and Marcel from France, and Koa from Hawaii, making appearnaces.
This year’s hot names are also more gender-specific than last year, with fewer unisex names on the list.
